About the Author
Ren? Descartes, known as the Father of Modern Philosophy and inventor of Cartesian coordinates, was a seventeenth century French philosopher, mathematician, and writer. Descartes made significant contributions to the fields of philosophy and mathematics, and was a proponent of rationalism, believing strongly in fact and deductive reasoning. Working in both French and Latin, he wrote many mathematical and philosophical works including The World, Discourse on a Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Passions of the Soul. He is perhaps best known for originating the statement I think, therefore I am.

John Cottingham is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Reading; Professorial Research Fellow at Heythrop College, University of London; and an honorary fellow of St John's College, Oxford. He has served as chairman of the British Society for the History of Philosophy, president of the Mind Association, president of the Aristotelian Society and president of the British Society for the Philosophy of Religion. He was also editor of Ratio, the international journal of analytic philosophy, from 1993 to 2012. Professor Cottingham's books include Descartes (1986), The Rationalists (1988), Reason, Will and Sensation (1994), Western Philosophy: An Anthology, 2nd edition (2007), Philosophy and the Good Life: Reason and the Passions in Greek, Cartesian and Psychoanalytic Ethics (Cambridge, 1998), On the Meaning of Life (2003), The Spiritual Dimension (Cambridge, 2005), Cartesian Reflections (2008) and Why Believe? (2009). He is co-translator of the standard three-volume Cambridge edition of The Philosophical Writings of Descartes (1985 91). The Moral Life, a collection of essays honoring his work on moral philosophy and philosophy of religion, was published in 2008.

Excellent source for Descartes otherwise unknown motives
By A Customer
Descartes correspondence is key to understanding his texts. This source book brings to light otherwise untranslated letters from Descartes to his most trusted friends describing his fears and desires for his work. Kenny, as usual, does an excellent job!

A must for Descartesians
By W. Hillier
For some reason, the Anglophone world went 300 years without a substantial translation of Descartes's correspondence. 20 years after that, the number of letters translated was doubled. This was the result.

Like most selections, this one is vulnerable to the criticism of being both overinclusive and underinclusive. Overinclusive, because it includes the biweekly correspondence with Descartes's agent, countryman, and informer, in Paris, Father Mersenne, which takes about half the book and includes such banalities as printer's errors on the _Meditations_. Underinclusive, because, for instance, it edits down the Open Letter to Voetius down to a mere four pages, from over 200 in the Latin! What we get is mostly diatribe. Are we to assume that the missing 196 pages of writing, the publication of which he authorized during his lifetime, were also mostly diatribe? Far worse, however, is the exclusion of all letters written by anybody but Descartes. This is unusual, and significantly impedes the interpretation of what remains. This is most telling when Descartes reports having sent copies of some of his letters to a third party. He omits certain of these because they are "unintelligible" without the letters to which they are replies, which he does not have permission to send, yet they are included in this translation. Apparently, the translator/editors disagree with Descartes on the unintelligibility of his own writings! I would be inclined to agree with him. He is not otherwise too soft on his readers.

But what the translator/editors say in the preface is true, these are essential to a proper understanding of Descartes's philosophy. There are replies to objections to many of his works not included in the _Objections and Replies to the Meditations_ (vol. 2), but, alas, as noted above, the objections to which the replies are directed are not included. There are also juicy biographical tidbits, such as the political maneuvering that seems to have contributed substantially at least to the near-term success of Descartes's work.
