Excellent Survey of Recent Literature

Gavin Flood's introduction is not only comprehensive, but readable. I have taught this book for two years now and feel that my students glean a sense not just of Hindu traditions today but also of the history and transformations of Hindu traditions through time. The best thing about the book is the subtle incorporation of the latest scholarly work on Hinduism. At the same time, Flood appreciates the insider's perspective and what is really significant to Hindus themselves. Flood has conducted research in both North and South India and is sensitive to the geographic differences of religious practice in India.
Previous reviews on amazon.com suggesting that Flood uses the Aryan migration question as an organizing principle of his book are ludicrous. He devotes a total of 5 pages to this discussion in the middle of the second chapter. Hardly an obsession. Furthermore, the unsubstantiated charge of Orientalism by another reviewer also seems misplaced. A minute's glance at the bibliography shows that Flood has used Indological (textual), anthropological, historical, and feminist scholarly literature to produce his introduction.
This is an excellent work on the history of Hindu religious traditions that deserves a place among the best out there.

The Introduction to Hinduism

Previous reviews of this text have shown either a very strong like or dislike and I have to place myself with the former. As noted in other reviews, the attacks are wide of the mark. Professor Flood is one of the leading scholars within his field and has taught Hinduism for many years at various universities and both the depth of his learning and the ability to relate this in a clear but not simplistic way to students are demonstrated here. Anyone seeking an introduction to Hinduism need look no further than this book that provides an excellent account of all its major features incorporating recent scholarship and clear analysis. My only regret is that this book was not on the market when I was an undergraduate student! I hope prospective readers will not be put off by the partial reviews given herein but will recognize this book as the definitive introduction to its subject, it is sure to become a classic eclipsing the older standard works entirely.

Well-Written and Authorative

I recommend this book for the reader who has some knowledge of Hinduism and would like to delve a little deeper into the subject.

The book is clearly written, and every chapter is loaded with information. Flood knows this area very well, and he expertly guides the reader through the bewildering, and often contradictory world of Hindu philosophy and theology.

I feel that this book would work best if read along with a book that focused more on Hindu religious practice. As Flood concentrates more on the thematic trends and concepts within Hinduism, rather than on the practical, everyday rituals and rites of passage that make the religion so vibrant and alive. His book sets the picture, it gives the reader a framework from which to start painting one's own conceptual view.

I would suggest then also reading such books as "Darshan" by Eck, and "Samskara: Rites of a Dead Man" by Murthy, in conjunction with this in order to get a more holistic and in-depth understanding of a complex subject.

Corporate Capitalism as a non-market process

Picking up where he left off in "Competitive Advantage on the Shop Floor", Lazonick deepens his critique of capitalism's self-representation in neoclassical economic theory. Combining the insights of Schumpeter, Marshall and Marx, he convincingly argues that the emergence of large corporations actually displace "free market" "mechanisms" of resource allocation, radically changes the manner in which the pricing of commodities occurs, and transforms the balance of power between workers and the owners of enterprises. Central to his analysis is the various ways in which organizational complexity and planning within large firms leads to an undemocratic politics of knowledge creation and diffusion that determines the division of the firm's revenue into wages and profits. In the process of narrating the emergence of corporate capitalism, Lazonick elaborates on how large enterprises become locked into economies of speed that exacerbate "labor-management" tensions that, in turn, sap firm's abilities to innovate in the face of international competition. When societies fall prey to these problems, economic stagnation and class conflict result and those with the power within corporations use that power to grab a larger share of a revenue-pie that is either growing at a much slower rate or shrinking. For Lazonick, capitalism is a non-equilibrium process that is always political, generative of uncertainty and an "inequality [that] has undermined the incentives for those who participate in the business organization's specialized division of labor to make the long-term commitment's of their skills and efforts that the innovation process requires." Like "Competitive Advantage on the Shop Floor", this one is a must read; and at a fraction of the cost.

Nothing new here...twisted prose

Nothing new here... just a tortured and twisted spin on the standard "theory of the firm" as developed by economists over the last 50 years. The author tries hard to rehash this stuff as his own original insight with a twist, using "Japan Inc" as a role model (bad choice, but the book was written in 1991). He plays lip service to "theory of the firm" giants like Arrow, Coase and others, but belittles them, as if he has something better to offer (he doesn't). Essentially the author points out that monopolies don't play by the rules laid out in perfect competition, then he tries to make the unproven case that a company, by its organization or society's organization, can 'will' or 'transform' inself into a monopoly (this is the apparently original 'twist' by the author). While that's every company's dream, and many try to do this (via product differentiation, patents, economies of scale, etc) the author doesn't really make his case as to how to do this on a systematic basis, or if it has ever happened thus.

A waste of paper; into my fireplace it goes.

A landmark in narratology

I thought that this classic work by Genette was going to be a tad daunting. However, I couldn't have been more mistaken. I purchased "Paratexts" to better analyse the paratextual features of a number of autobiographical novels written for children even though Genette's focus is on literature in general. Genette goes into a lot of detail yet his explanations are always very clear. Although the examples provided are often taken from the canon of French literature, this should not,in my opinion, prove to be an obstacle for any reader, whether literature scholar or enthusiast. The text deals with practically each and every facet of the paratext and it is invaluable for any scholar, particularly scholars who are interested in aspects of narratology which are often ignored or simply taken for granted. This book has made me realise that paratexts coach the reader into adopting the role moulded for him or her by the author and/or publishing house. But can paratexts subtly influence the reader's potential to read against the grain? "Paratexts" is the kind of enterprise that makes one think seriously about this and other intriguing questions occupying narratology today.

A brilliant essay

Paratexts (titles, epigraphs, notes and the like) add dimensions of meaning and effect, theme and rhetorical power to literary works; yet, oddly, before Genette, they were taken for granted, that is: mis-taken.
Like his other major works, Narrative Discourse, and Palimspestes, Paratexts is a clear, well supported, and coherent encyclopedia of sub-forms defined and illustrated in a series of brilliant analyses. Genette's insights improve the reader's, not only into works both know, but above all, perhaps, into those as yet unread by either.
Of all recent French theorists, Genette is closest in spirit and method (as well as accessibility) to mid-century American formalists. And though his work can be exploited by cultural studies and even gender theorists, it remains sharply focused on the alpha and omega of literary study: the text.

Setting the records straight

Renowned Polish composer Frédéric François Chopin (1810-1849) composed an amazing variety of compositions including some 50 mazurkas, 25 preludes, 24 etudes, 21 nocturnes, 17 waltzes, 11 polonaises, 4 ballades and 3 sonatas. Chopin's E minor and F minor Piano Concertos, however, are particularly important as they played a vital role in his career as a composer-pianist. Chopin: The Piano Concertos, written by Chopin expert John Rink - recipient of a Ph.D. from Cambridge University for his thesis The Evolution of Chopin's `Structural Style' and its Relation to Improvisation in May, 1989 - provides an engaging, comprehensive analysis of these concertos as well as providing vital information about the environment in which these Concertos were composed and how they were received. The author's multifaceted exploration of these concertos successfully provides the reader with a sound understanding of Chopin's Piano Concertos as well as offering a deeper appreciation for his work and his genius. As well as including Chopin's E minor and F minor Piano Concertos, the book is complete with an in-depth analysis of Chopin's enigmatic `third concerto', the Allegro de concert.
Before going into Chopin's Piano Concertos, the author sets the tone for the book by noting that "Chopin's piano concertos have enjoyed enormous popularity ever since their composition ... but they have also suffered some of the harshest scholarly criticism inflicted on his works". He rebuttals with, "... when viewed as music to be performed rather than scores to be dissected on paper, they belong to [Chopin's] most successful creations". He offers this book as "[an attempt] to set the record straight, re-evaluating the concertos against the early nineteenth-century traditions that shaped them so that their many outstanding qualities can be better appreciated."
In his first chapter, appropriately titled "Creation", the author explains the great significance of the Piano Concertos to Chopin's evolution as a musician. He describes the creation of Chopin's F minor Concerto, Chopin's newly found commitment to a virtuoso career, the creation of the E minor Concerto, and offers a brief introductory analysis of the parallels between these two concertos. He goes on to describe the first performances, first reviews and first editions of these concertos, explaining the general acceptance of Chopin as a genius in the musical community, yet also the criticism Chopin faced introducing a creativity that was often mistaken as a weakness. The chapter continues with an overview of the publication of these concertos and concludes with an insightful section titled "Chopin as teacher", outlining Chopin's teaching practices and depicting a connection between the glosses in scores used by Chopin's pupils and associates and Chopin's own playing and teaching styles.
Before reevaluating the concertos, the author provides a chapter titled "Interpretation", summarizing Chopin's incredibly diverse reception over the past 150 years and providing an inclusive summary of reactions from noted critics, composers, editors and performers. These reactions include, among others, those of critics Ludwig Rellstab, Gottfried Fink, J. W. Davidson, and those of composers Schumann and Liszt. An analysis of Frederick Nieck's influential biography of Chopin - the first scholarly monograph on Chopin - and its impact on society and influence on future authors assessing the concertos is also included. The author continues with a description of the trials and tribulations in the musical scores of these concertos, explaining the evolution of the scores from first edition to later versions, collected editions, editions with second-piano accompaniment, full scores, transcriptions and arrangements and finally re-orchestrations. The chapter concludes with a discussion titled "Performers", a very interesting and informative section considering Chopin's first two concertos are available on over seventy recordings each, performed by most concert pianists throughout the twentieth century. The author describes an appeal from several of Chopin's former students - Lenz, Mikuli and Princess Marcelina Czartoryska - that Chopin's concertos had been misinterpreted, and goes on to further debate the interpretations of Chopin's music.
Having successfully prepared the readers, author John Rink goes on to offer his own re-evaluation of the two concertos. Beginning my explaining the principles and premises by which music is evaluated, he describes his narrative approach in the analytical re-evaluation of Chopin's concertos:
"I shall first define each movement's skeletal structure, identifying important `stabilizing' features such as tonal scheme and sectional form, and then in tracing through the music I shall observe temporally defined processes like the generation and relaxation of momentum, rhythmic flux, and small- and large-scale gestural impulse, all of which help to transform the structural bedrock into a living musical statement."
He goes on to do just that, providing 17 pages of analysis on Chopin's Opus 21 and a subsequent 22 pages of analysis on Opus 11. He cautions that "words can never fully capture musical experience: its temporal course and emotional impact ultimately lie beyond the powers of verbal description" and continues by stating that "the foregoing analytical re-evaluation is in one sense another futile attempt to encapsulate the concertos in words, but at least it has been undertaken in a spirit of appreciation, not denigration. If nothing else, it has revealed the utter hollowness of Nieck's criticisms and those of his successors".
Finally, the fifth and final chapter "Chopin's third concerto" explores Chopin's third concerto, the Allegro de concert... Unlike the other two concertos, the author concludes that the current evaluation of this concerto is quite fair and states:
"it may be a legitimate interpretation, sure to be superseded in due course, but for the time being enlightening some aspect of the music's elusive meaning while leaving space for fresh evaluations to come."
The nature of this book is somewhat complex, however this book appeals not only to the music scholar but also to the music enthusiast. The comprehensive, informative and engaging nature of the book alone is sufficient to give it purpose, however, the heart of this book really lies in the re-evaluation of Chopin's first two concertos. John Rink set out to set the records straight, and succeeded to do so in an analytic and objective manor. As a devoted admirer of Chopin's work myself, having listened to Chopin everyday during the entire 9 month term before my birth and having learned to play his pieces since the age of 3, I find deep emotion, passion and genius in Chopin's work. However, to write a book such as this one takes a vast scholastic understanding of music and Chopin in particular, and John Rink is certainly qualified to do so. Previously I had little knowledge of these concertos, however I'm sure that even if I had, I would still have found this book to be very valuable, as I'm sure many others have and will. It is a valuable and much needed contribution to the study of Chopin.
