Professor Wilfrid E. Rumble Jr has taught at Vassar College for 42 years. Among his many publications are American Legal Realism (Cornell, 1968) and The Thought of John Austin (Athlone Press, 1985)

Raymond Geuss is Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. He has taught widely in Germany and the United States, and has been an editor of the series of Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought since its inception. His previous books include The Idea of a Critical Theory (Cambridge, 1981, ISBN 0521 284228), Morality, Culture, and History (Cambridge, 1999, ISBN 0 521 635683), and Public Goods, Private Goods (Princeton, 2001). He has also published a collection of classical verse in his own English translations, Parrots, Poets, and Philosophers & Good Advice (London, 1999).

Quentin Skinner is Barber Beaumont Professor of the Humanities at Queen Mary, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academia Europaea, and a foreign member of many other learned societies. His scholarship, which is available in more than twenty languages, has won him numerous awards, including the Wolfson Prize for History in 1979 and a Balzan Prize in 2006. His books include The Foundations of Modern Political Thought (2 volumes, 1978), Reason and Rhetoric in the Philosophy of Hobbes (1996), Liberty Before Liberalism (1998), Hobbes and Republican Liberty (2008), Forensic Shakespeare (2014) and a three-volume collection of essays, Visions of Politics (2002).

Awful OCR rendition of the Province of Jurisprudence Determined

I had no idea that the scanned version of this book would be of such low quality. As far as I'm concerned, the book was all-but-unreadable. The inner parts of paragraphs were usually readable. But the openings were often unreadable, seemingly starting in mid-sentence. And most of the different sectional markers normally used to guide reading were either missing or run in with the regular text. All-in-all, I cannot recall seeing such a poor OCR job for many years. I can only wonder what software the publisher used or what carelessness was exhibited in the scanning of this book.

This copy contains numerous typos, terrible formatting, no footnotes, chapter titles--it is all but unreadable. I ordered this for a class I'm taking and had to buy a wholly new copy. Avoid this at all costs, DO NOT BE FOOLED.

Previously published articles are reviewed. In too many it has been difficult to determine whether authors are consistently writing about day-time or night-time, life-long or acquired, wetting. Emphasis is given to papers in which soundly based research is clearly reported. Though this book was inspired by and derives from a recent International Colloquium at Newcastle, it is anything but a report of that Colloquium. To extend coverage and avoid repetition, a number of chapters have been specially written, and papers have been re-written, fused or omitted; several up-to-date, comprehensive and authoritative reviews have been included. Whether readers are community, hospital or family doctors, or psychologists, they can enjoy criticising and evaluating the at times differing views put forward, and can synthesise their own new and better conclusions. The editors have aimed to clear the way for further research by identifying clearly what is known and posing questions. Equally, however, it is hoped that this volume will promote a deeper and better understanding of bladder control and enuresis, and enable doctors who use it for reference to give more effective help to children with wetting problems.

Wonderful Surprise

I have not had a more penetrating and yet accessible treatment of modern physics. This is my bed time lullaby. It is sweet, it is enchanting, and it gets you lost. Wonderful treatment of Quantum fields and excellent exposition of space -time and Feynman diagrams. I couldnt have been any better. And this is not my first title on modern physics. I hav stunbled on many pathetic ones untill finding Mr Right.

Modern physics as natural philosophy

As I write these words, I stop frequently to consider how they might best be arranged, an activity no different in principle from picking my way along a trail when hiking over tricky terrain. For human beings, walking and language production (at least spoken language) are natural, their potential part of our DNA, their actualization emblematic of a basic level of developmental health and social well being. Mathematics too has been called a language, and indeed certain features of this language (e.g. the ability of neonates to recognize small numbers of things) are innate. But none of us go on in the normal course of development to become fluent in mathematics without a great deal of difficult, sustained effort.

It has become axiomatic among people who write popular books on scientific subjects to suppose that physics cannot really be presented without mathematics. And if that axiom is true for classical physics, it is even more true for modern physics, the surreal world of quantum interference, antimatter, black holes and M theory.

But now along comes Dutch physicist Vincent Icke, and in his book THE FORCE OF SYMMETRY he has, one might say, renormalized popular accounts of modern physics. He has been able to state the concepts of modern physics in a way which is lucid, coherent and, in all but the very simplest instances, nonmathematical. The novice physicist will not have to unlearn any of the concepts he acquires in Ickes' book after he goes on to master the mathematical intricacies of quantum field theory. The advanced student can use Ickes' text to obtain a detailed topography of the field.

There is much to delight in this charming book. The five years I spent studying theoretical physics was a time of painful head banging on questions like, "How do you know this?" Few writers have the grace of Feynman, the ability to say about some arcane point, this is as much we know about it, no deeper than this. Icke, like Feynman, is very careful to signpost his epistemological wanderings. He lets the reader know when it is analogy, intuition, logic, experiment, convention, or metaphysics which is progenitor of some bit of physics knowledge.

Because of his careful attention to the grounding of his discourse, Icke does not fall into the deep pit which is, alas, standard in most popular science writing. You know what I mean. There you are, happy reader, blithely meandering along in someone's account of protein synthesis, the inflationary period, mathematical intractability... the subject doesn't matter. You are reading along, and you are beginning to feel the first faint blush of hope. Maybe you will understand it this time! And then you turn the page. And then the trail disappears. No matter how many times you go back and forth over the ground, there is now a chasm in your understanding as big as the Central Rift Valley. I first had this experience years ago reading Bertrand Russell's account of special relativity. All was well, and suddenly, darkness descended. I took the book to a friend who is a physicist at Lawrence Livermore, and asked, "Why can't I understand this?" He took a look, "You don't understand it because he has left out the following (very long list of) points." Thus I learned that it is OK to be simple minded in the world of science. Almost a gift, really.

Of particular note because of their exceptional clarity are the sections on: quantum interference, superposition, angular momentum, antimatter, gauge theory, isospin, Yang-Mills fields, the color field, symmetry and symmetry breaking. First published in 1995, the book has too little to say on string theory, but prophesied that supersymmetrical theories will lead the way in mapping what was then the frontier. Please Mr. Icke, update your book!

Physics, as Feynman said, keeps the simple stuff. The rest goes to chemistry, biology and engineering. Probably the line that most readers of Icke's book are sure to remember is this one: "Physics is not difficult; it's just weird." A funny little assertion, yet one that points in the direction of the kind of knowledge that physics is. The physics of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has introduced us to a universe too strange (in the lexical sense) to even be imagined. Physics, in its many acts of discovery, has taken us further outside of ourselves than any other human study. The exploration of physics, by lay persons and physicists alike, is a thrilling adventure. It is science become natural philosophy, once again. Better than any other book of its kind, I found Vincent Icke's book to motivate this exploration. The last words are his: "in the book of physics, there never is a final sentence."

The Force of an awsome subject and GREAT writing!

This is such a great book that I've taken the time to prepare an annotated table of contents for this review:

PREFACE (Begins with examples of "Quantum Mechanics in action". Here is a quote which I hope illuminates the author's sensitivity towards your desire come away from reading this with a sense of it's friendliness: "Physics is not difficult; it's just weird. Physics, contrary to the opinion of many journalists and parents of scientists, is not particularly hard to explain or to learn. To learn how to use relativity, you do not have to be Einstein; nor do you have to be Heisenberg to do Quantum Mechanics. Physics is weird because your intuition is false. To understand what an electron's world is like, you've got to be an electron, or jolly nearly." Here are a few more points Icke makes before setting out on this wonderful journey of discovery: "Physics is powerful.", "Physics is beautiful.", "Physics is simplification, and so is explanation... This is the real stuff, even though there is a two-semester lecture series of heavy technical material behind every chapter. In fact, it is my intention that you could read this book right alongside a textbook on gauge theory." I believe that, before you've finished this book, you will have happily come to the conclusion that this author has delivered a well-prepared & friendly presentation of his points in the above thesis.

The Palermo revolt spread quickly across Sicily, opposed by Frankish lords and the Italian clergy, and supported by Sicilian commoners, Aragonese infiltrators, and Byzantine spies. Against a complicated multinational backdrop, the noted medieval historian Steven Runciman deftly portrays the tangled world of Mediterranean politics in the 13th century, the apex of the Middle Ages.

Sicilian History Expertly Done

In the early spring of 1282 a great fleet lay at anchor in the harbor of Palermo, Sicily. The commander of the fleet, Charles of Anjou, brother of King (and later Saint) Louis of France, and by the blessing of the Pope and his own political machinations, King of the Two Sicilies, planned to attack the Byzantine capital of Constantinople and re-establish the Latin Empire, with himself as Emperor. For Charles, a man of formidable military and administrative talent, and considerable political ruthlessness, the possibility of being an emperor, of dominating the Mediterranean world, must have seemed so close that he could not fail to grasp the opportunity. And then everything changed.
The Sicilian Vespers, by the late Sir Steven Runciman, is the story of the late 13th century European world that created Charles of Anjou. Runciman describes in considerable, and very interesting detail, the interplay of politics and religion at that time, especially the bare knuckle politicking of the Popes, whose attempts at creating a universal Christendom ruled by the papacy eventually lessened respect not only for the individual popes involved, but for the papacy as an institution as well. The interweaving lines of narrative come together on the evening of March 29th, Easter Monday, of 1282, when a group of drunken Frenchmen arrived outside the Church of the Holy Spirit in Palermo just as the crowd of worshippers was going in for the Vespers service. One of the Frenchmen made advances, or actually tried to rape, a young Sicilian woman. Her outraged husband killed the Frenchman, and when the Frenchmen's friends drew their swords, the crowd jumped them and killed them as well. The oppressed Sicilians then went on a rampage through the streets of Palermo, screaming Moranu il Franchkisi [Death to the French!] and slaughtering every Frenchman they could find, including French priests, nuns, and monks, as well as Sicilian women who had married Frenchmen. The rebellion rapidly spread to other cities across Sicily.
Runciman expertly weaves together the story of what happened and why it happened and what the consequences of the great rebellion were for Charles and the Sicilians and for a papacy more interested in politics than religion. There might be a better book on this subject somewhere, but I tend to doubt it; Runciman writes in clear and understandable English, a talent not usually cultivated by academic historians in the United States, and he knows his subject backwards and forwards. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the Middle Ages, and to anyone interested in how history ought to be written.

Byzantine diplomacy was the best in the world...

Sir Steven Runciman was one of the leading scholars of the Middle Ages. He also had a profound understanding of diplomacy and warfare. He is not only the author of this book, but also several books on the Crusades and Byzantium. However, this I feel is his best book. First of all it is a wonderful story. This is how the Byzantine empire managed with no army, no navy, very little money, but with a great deal of diplomacy and intelligence to prevent a planned invasion from the mightiest power in 100 years. This book should be required reading for all statesmen, would be statesmen, and military planners. Runciman describes here how things can go wrong regardless of ability, manpower, and money when one is faced with a very clever foe.

Well researched, well written piece of scholastic history

I was pleasantly surprised to find this a well-informed piece of modern historical anayalsis of the later thirteenth Mediterranean history. The book focuses primarily on the careers of both Manfred and Charles and their struggle to maintain an outdated concept of ancient imperialism. More than anything this book clearly shows the final transistions from an autocratical imperial Europe to a papal-dominated fractured set of European vassal states.
It is interesting for its succinct prose and deliberate factual outlay. Rather than seeking to impress upon his own ideas, Runciman deliberately tells us the history from a Latin perspective without impression of telling a story with all its propagandistic baggage. Don't be fooled by the usual publisher gumph on the back. The incident in Palermo in 1282 is used as a focal point for the history rather than being the main point of discussion and the work succeeds all the more for it.
A hugely impressive piece of scholastic history and, I would think, a vital book for any serious student of thirteenth century Mediterranean history.
