About the Author
Ren? Descartes, known as the Father of Modern Philosophy and inventor of Cartesian coordinates, was a seventeenth century French philosopher, mathematician, and writer. Descartes made significant contributions to the fields of philosophy and mathematics, and was a proponent of rationalism, believing strongly in fact and deductive reasoning. Working in both French and Latin, he wrote many mathematical and philosophical works including The World, Discourse on a Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Passions of the Soul. He is perhaps best known for originating the statement I think, therefore I am.

John Cottingham is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Reading; Professorial Research Fellow at Heythrop College, University of London; and an honorary fellow of St John's College, Oxford. He has served as chairman of the British Society for the History of Philosophy, president of the Mind Association, president of the Aristotelian Society and president of the British Society for the Philosophy of Religion. He was also editor of Ratio, the international journal of analytic philosophy, from 1993 to 2012. Professor Cottingham's books include Descartes (1986), The Rationalists (1988), Reason, Will and Sensation (1994), Western Philosophy: An Anthology, 2nd edition (2007), Philosophy and the Good Life: Reason and the Passions in Greek, Cartesian and Psychoanalytic Ethics (Cambridge, 1998), On the Meaning of Life (2003), The Spiritual Dimension (Cambridge, 2005), Cartesian Reflections (2008) and Why Believe? (2009). He is co-translator of the standard three-volume Cambridge edition of The Philosophical Writings of Descartes (1985 91). The Moral Life, a collection of essays honoring his work on moral philosophy and philosophy of religion, was published in 2008.

Excellent source for Descartes otherwise unknown motives
By A Customer
Descartes correspondence is key to understanding his texts. This source book brings to light otherwise untranslated letters from Descartes to his most trusted friends describing his fears and desires for his work. Kenny, as usual, does an excellent job!

A must for Descartesians
By W. Hillier
For some reason, the Anglophone world went 300 years without a substantial translation of Descartes's correspondence. 20 years after that, the number of letters translated was doubled. This was the result.

Like most selections, this one is vulnerable to the criticism of being both overinclusive and underinclusive. Overinclusive, because it includes the biweekly correspondence with Descartes's agent, countryman, and informer, in Paris, Father Mersenne, which takes about half the book and includes such banalities as printer's errors on the _Meditations_. Underinclusive, because, for instance, it edits down the Open Letter to Voetius down to a mere four pages, from over 200 in the Latin! What we get is mostly diatribe. Are we to assume that the missing 196 pages of writing, the publication of which he authorized during his lifetime, were also mostly diatribe? Far worse, however, is the exclusion of all letters written by anybody but Descartes. This is unusual, and significantly impedes the interpretation of what remains. This is most telling when Descartes reports having sent copies of some of his letters to a third party. He omits certain of these because they are "unintelligible" without the letters to which they are replies, which he does not have permission to send, yet they are included in this translation. Apparently, the translator/editors disagree with Descartes on the unintelligibility of his own writings! I would be inclined to agree with him. He is not otherwise too soft on his readers.

But what the translator/editors say in the preface is true, these are essential to a proper understanding of Descartes's philosophy. There are replies to objections to many of his works not included in the _Objections and Replies to the Meditations_ (vol. 2), but, alas, as noted above, the objections to which the replies are directed are not included. There are also juicy biographical tidbits, such as the political maneuvering that seems to have contributed substantially at least to the near-term success of Descartes's work.

Pushing Boundaries: Language and Culture in a Mexicano Community, by Olga A. Vásquez, Lucinda Pease-Alvarez, Sheila M. Shannon

Pushing Boundaries offers a unique perspective on the ways bilingual children and their families use and learn language in Eastside, a Mexicano immigrant community in Northern California. The authors track how children use language in a variety of settings: home, school, and community. What they discover is that at times, these bilingual children use both Spanish and English in the same conversation and that they often help their non-English-speaking adult family members and friends translate and interpret the modern world. The authors demonstrate how ethnic children, in collaboration with those around them, learn to engage in meaningful interactions, to derive meaning from written or oral texts, and to use their first language and cultural knowledge as a critical component for learning their second language and its underlying cultural norms.

Review
'Language in Use is a good, solid course and will appeal particlarly to those students and teachers who enjoy an overt approach to grammar, and will appease those of us who feel that vocabulary has boon somewhat neglected in other courses. This course will instil confidence in new teachers and provide a refreshing alternative for experienced teachers looking for a change in their core text-book.' ATESOL No 2, 1995

'Of other important features of the course I would mention its flexibility (the Teacher's Book allows teachers to tailor the material and make short cuts through the course), clarity (clear organisation of the material makes the course attractive and easy to use) and creativity (there are a lot of involving and stimulating tasks that encourage personal input from the learners).' 'I used Language in Use Intermediate in a group of university students last year. It was a complete success. In anonymous questionnaires after a year of study the students wrote that they had never before come across a book that did not demand cramming material, but made learning so easy, natural and exciting.' English No 43, 1997 (Russian newspaper)

'The quality and originality of the illustrations is quite outstanding ... great visual stimulation for both teachers and students making the books a pleasure to use. Everything is set out very clearly for teachers and learnes alike by means of user-friendly instructions, explanations, examples, summaries, and overall organisation.' VATME Newsletter, 1993

'I would recommend this Course Book as a modern up-to-date, user friendly package which could be used as support material for a language course, or part of a whole system which would extend and consolidate class work.' QATESOL Newsletter No.1, 1995

Augustine: Political Writings (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought), by Augustine

This collection brings together thirty-five letters and sermons of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo from 396-430 AD, that deal with political matters. The letters and sermons are both practical and principled and treat many essential themes in Augustine's thought, including the responsibilities of citizenship, the relationship between the church and secular authority, religious coercion, and war and peace. These texts complement Augustine's classic The City of God, and give students direct insight into the political and social world of late antiquity with which Augustine was immediately involved.

St. Augustine meek and mild?
By Ashtar Command
This anthology contains 35 relatively short letters and sermons by the Church Father Augustine, dealing mostly with political and legal issues. They should really be read together with Augustine's major work "The City of God", but are quite informative even in isolation. The anthology also contains an introduction by the editor, plus extensive footnotes, and short biographies of the persons mentioned in Augustine's letters. Since the translation is occasionally somewhat strange ("security" instead of "salvation" etc), readers shouldn't skip the translator's notes either. For people with the right sense of humour, the footnotes can actually be quite entertaining. One of them explains what the Book of Job is, presumably because the anthology is directed at students of political history, and the editor doesn't expect them to be well versed in matters Biblical! Personally, I thought the Book of Job was common knowledge... :-)

Augustine's letters are adressed to high-ranking Roman officials, both governors and military commanders. His letters are candid in tone, sometimes even provocative. They contain fewer formal greetings than the officials' letters adressed to him. This says something about the power of the Catholic Church in the Late Roman Empire. As bishop of Hippo in North Africa, Augustine was in effect a powerful state official in his own right. This explains the tone of his letters, and why he could treat even the emperor's men as equals. While ultimate decision-making power was in the hands of the imperial court, Church councils could lobby the court and perhaps get the emperor to do their bidding. Augustine was therefore very much part of the Old Men's Club of the Late Empire.

On most issues, it's difficult for a modern to sympathize with Augustine. His stern blend of other-wordly Platonism, belief in original sin, and predestination strikes us as typically "medieval" and "dark age". The Doctor of Grace, as he was later called, was also against freedom of worship. He believed that everyone in the Roman Empire should be Catholic, and that the emperors had the right to force people to join the Church. After all, it's all for their own good. Augustine also rejected the right to rebel against authority, any authority. Bad emperors are a chastisment from God, and should be suffered by the good. If they are really bad, it's right to speak out against them, but solely for the purpose of becoming a martyr. In one of his sermons, included in this book, Augustine rebukes his congregation for attacking and killing a corrupt imperial tax-collector. From his Neo-Platonic perspective, Augustine declares that life is short, death inevitable and earthly possesions ultimately meaningless. Taking the law into your own hands is therefore pointless and, indeed, sinful. Few people today would take up such a position, and rightly so. Augustine comes across as a defender of the Late Roman status quo, at a time when the degenerate Empire was already breaking up at its seams.

In other ways, however, "Political Writings" shows a somewhat unexpected and more humane side of Augustine than we might have expected. For starters, Augustine was against capital punishment, and often tried to get such sentences mitigated, even when directed against anti-Catholic rioters and rebels. His opposition to the death penalty was based on the following reasoning: people who die unrepentant will spend eternity in Hell, therefore it's better not to kill them, but to reform them instead. Augustine was also against torture, a commonplace practice even in the Christianized Roman Empire, although his opposition to this practice wasn't entirely consistent, since he didn't mind suspects being beaten up! At one point, the Roman governor of Africa, Macedonius, apparently sent Augustine a letter complaining about the bishop's constant intercession in favour of obviously guilty criminals. In his response, Augustine points out that since everyone is a sinner, showing mercy to criminals is a religious duty, and he explains that he has sometimes even attempted to get victims of theft to drop their cases against the thieves, rather than demanding restitution.

At the same time, Augustine wasn't always consistent in his attitude. In some letters, as already noted, he criticizes even victims of burglary or fraud for demanding compensation from the criminal. In other cases, he proposes fines himself as an alternative to the death penalty. The most interesting document in "Political Writings" is Letter 185, where Augustine admits that his attitude towards the Donatists have hardened. The Donatists were a group of Christians in North Africa regarded as heretical by the Catholic Church, and hence illegal, which didn't stop them from commanding wide-spread support, and often violently attacking both Roman landlords and Catholic clergy. Originally, Augustine opposed using force against the Donatists, simply calling for Roman military protection against Donatist attacks, trying to convince the Donatists of the error of their ways by peaceful preaching. Only in areas with Donatist violence against Catholics would the Donatists be punished by fines, and only their bishops. Emperor Honorius, however, went much further, and decreed that all Donatists were liable to harsh punishments, simply for being Donatists. In Letter 185, Augustine seems to come around to this harder position, fed up with Donatist resistance.

The final section deals with Augustine's view of war, always a tricky subject for Christians. After all, the Sermon on the Mount seems to preach non-resistance to evil. Augustine argues that Christians might nevertheless become soldiers and wage wars. After all, when Roman soldiers approached John the Baptist, he didn't tell them to quit the army, but simply not to commit crimes against humanity. And what about the Roman centurion who asked Jesus to heal his son, or Cornelius, the righteous Gentile who became a Christian? They were both soldiers. A particularly interesting letter in this section is no. 220, sent to Boniface, a Roman commander in North Africa who had rebelled against the empress Galla Placidia. True to form, Augustine calls on Boniface to make peace with the Empire, and stop his troops from plundering the North African countryside, concentrating on fighting the "barbarians" instead. Boniface did eventually make his peace with the empress, but to late to save Roman Africa. When Augustine lied on his deathbed in AD 430, Hippo was besieged by the Vandals...

In sum, this volume is extremely interesting, especially for serious stundents of Church history, Late Roman history or theology. Recommended.

Uneasy Truths
By Spike da Peke
Augustine is one of the leading theologians of the Latin church, whose famous "Confessions" and "City of God" are mainstays of Catholic high school and college theology courses. This is the other Augustine, swimming in the water's of Roman Imperial power, even if these waters are growing more shallow every passing year. By his life's end, Augustine will see "barbarians" dissect his beloved Empire, and it is clear that it is his Empire. His conscience is not at all pricked when he calls out for the troops to protect his recently established Latin orthodoxy from various heretics. Every reader of the "Confessions" should read this very telling tome.

Very good
By B. Newman
It's probably the best summary you could hope for in such a concise format. For anyone who's interested in the topic but doesn't have the time to read a 4 volume history, this is a good one. A caveat however, there are some factual errors (a few mistakes on dates of publication, etc.) that better editing should have caught.

Book

The condition of the book was listed as "good." I do not agree because many pages were underlined in pen. Had I known about the underlining I would not have purchased the item. I could have paid less for other books listed in fair condition. I believe that the seller should have been more specific.

Vernon Booth: a classic in scientific writing
By mike.brisco@flinders.edu.au
This book is by one of the first authors to recognise that communication skills are important in science, and that they are a craft that has rules and principles that any student can learn relatively easily. It deserves to be treated as a classic, and should be compulsory reading for any student of the life sciences.
I can recall reading it with much interest during my PhD in the 1980's, when it was about the only work available in this field, and various biochemical societies in the UK made it available to students. Much of the advice on straightforward communication style is still extremely valid today. In the later 80's and 90's, the field of writing skills took off, and now most University bookshops have several shelves of books on writing skills and how to write a thesis. Booth's book is short, direct, and the advice is very practical. Read it!

The book is written in a very segmented form. If you are looking for a reference book that you can look up sections for specific presentations or papers, this is the book for you. It is, however, hard to just sit down and read from cover to cover.

Geography, Technology, and War: Studies in the Maritime History of the Mediterranean, 649-1571 (Past and Present Publications), by John H.

When maritime transport and communication depended on muscle and wind-power, the Mediterranean Sea functioned as a symbiotic force between the civilisations which surrounded it, at once the major dividing barrier and the major connecting element. In this study, the technological limitations of maritime traffic are considered in conjunction with the peculiar geographical conditions within which it operated, and which led to the establishment of major sea lanes on trunk routes along which traffic could move safely, efficiently, and economically. These trunk routes remained virtually unchanged from antiquity to the sixteenth century, and eventually constituted economic and strategic maritime frontiers between civilisations. At the same time, the technological limitations of the oared galley meant that coasts and islands along the trunk routes had also to be held, a necessity which favoured geographically the Christian West over the world of Byzantium and Islam.

Ground breaking
By JPS
By focusing on meteological and oceanographic conditions in the Mediterranean, this book from John Pryor, which was first published in 1988, shows and explains the limitations that sailing and oar ships faced for over a thousand years in the Mediterranean (from 649 AD, when the Byzantines lost the unchallenged mastery of the Mediterranean to the Muslims, up to the battle of Lepanto in 1571, when the Christican coalition defeated the Ottoman fleet). It also shows how these limitations impacted on naval warfare and piracy with the latter also influencing sea travel and trade.

The book, which is relatively small (200 pages of text), well written, and easy to read, is divided into seven chapters. These fall into two categories, as the author states himself in his introduction. The first category (the sea, the ships and navigation: the routes and their implications) sets the scene and presents the constraints and multiple limits that affecting seafearing in the Mediterranean. The second group of studies (the ninth and tenth centuries, the twelth and thirteenth centuries, maritime traffic: la guerre de couse, the Turks and the Barbary corsairs) provide, together, a chronological narrative which is informed by these constraints and limits, largely explaining why specific strategical or tactical decisions were taken.

As the author makes perfectly clear, this book is NOT a history of the Mediterranean and not even a history of naval warfare in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. What it did, however, is to show and emphasize the importance of logistical and technological limitations and open up a whole (and relatively new) field of research for historians and archeologists. What it does for us, mere readers, is to improve considerably out understand of the whole period of conflict between Muslims and Christians across the Mediterranean, in general, and of the ascendancy of the West during the period of the Crusades, in particular.

A very valuable and fascinating book to read

I must say I expected a lot more from this book. Although there are some clear analysis, all what has some interest could have perfectly summarized in 50 pages. It gives the wrong idea that a limited technology imposed sea routes in the Mediterranean till the advent of "round ships" from the North. However, the same routes so brilliantly described in the book are used today by any of the thousands of yachts sailing the Mediterranean, both motor and sail. And it should not take so easily for granted that small galleys and galliots could not withstand bad weather in some way. There is room for further research there.

Very Good Overview
By Al
Dr. Pryor successfully synthesized 800 years of Mediterranean maritme history into around 200 pages. The central thesis of the book is that "in the Middle Ages the meteorological and oceanographic conditions of the Mediterranean had a profound influence on the course of human history because medieval maritime technology gave only very partial mastery of the elements." In fleshing out this thesis, Pryor comprehensively details weather and currents and their effect on square rigged and lateen rigged sailing ships and galleys. Pryor begins by describing the operational environment and proceeds through a logical progression, discussing naval architecture and navigation, and commercial shipping. In the last half of the book, Pryor discusses the naval and maritime relationships and distinctives of western Europe, the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic states and the Crusader states. This work is an admirable supplement to W.L. Rodgers' 1939 work on medieval naval warfare. Pryor does an outstanding job of moving the narrative along, yet including enough detail to support his thesis. His bibliography is excellent and shows his exhaustive research. This book provides an excellent introduction for anyone interested in how the powers in the Mediterranean basin used the sea as a commercial and military means of projection.

Review
"The essays do a good job at demonstrating the continued significance and importance of Husserl's thought, and though they might not be accessible to some who are not already familiar with Husserl, they are consistently of high quality." Choice

"This weighty and distinguished collection explores the whole range of Husserl's writings, his posthumous manuscripts as well as his published works." International Philosophical Quarterly

"Proponents of the untenability of the gap between Continental and analytic philosophy will approve of this excellent collection. The editors have collected ten articles by authors who are both excellent philosophers and eminent Husserl scholars....These essays are nearly uniform in their clarity, logical rigor, thorough scholarship, and historical awareness....The Husserl of these essays is a rigorous and original thinker whose thought casts a critical light on a wide range of contemporary issues....The editor's readable and insightful introduction makes it an excellent tool for introducing Husserl's philosophy. Helpful critical bibliographies accompany almost all of the essays." Ethics

" Without a doubt, the editors have collected an impressive array of substantive essays dealing with many elements of Husserl's thought. Moreover, while avoiding any oversimplification of both the complexity and the development of Husserl's though, the texts gathered together here do yield a certain unified and coherent picture of Husserl as a 'philosopher in his own right'(2). Indeed, Husserl appears as a 'seminal figure in the evolution from traditional philosophy to the characteristic philosophical concerns of the late twentieth century..." R. Philip Buckley. A must for the beginner or the advance phenomenologist.
By Monadsense
Ever wonder how we can know anything outside our consciousness? Ever wonder what the consciousness is itself, or what structures it possesses? Ever wonder how we can have any objectivity if we live as subjective creatures? If you have then phenomenology may be something that interests you. To explore this topic, one can't help but encounter Husserl. He founded the discipline and laid broad grounds which must be thought through. Even as a graduate student in philosophy, I find the Husserlian text to be extremely difficult to read. This is not because the material itself is intrinsically hard. Husserl himself stressed the importance of intuitive understand. His ideas, once understood really do appeal to this intuitive understanding of how things are. What makes reading Husserl difficult is that all of the English translations have somehow forsaken good prose for accuracy. This and because the Husserlian corpus is very broad makes phenomenology a little threatening.
Enter the Cambridge Companion to Husserl. Succinct, relevant to the field, and applicable to everyday thinking, this book is a wonderful partner for the thinker who is beginning to think phenomenologically. It summarized Husserl's thoughts clearly so that the beginner can understand. However, it is not Husserl for Dummies! The thoughts expressed are subtle enough, so that new insights can be garnered in rereads of the the essays. All main areas of his philosophy are covered: the epistemology, the derivative ontology, language theory, ideas on math and objectivity.
Though not Husserl for Dummies! neither is it Husserl for the Husserlian. As a student, I had the pleasure of studying with two of the authors: David Smith and Rick Tiezen. From personal experience, both men are particularly precise and rigorous with their thinking. Besides teaching at UCIrvine, Smith also teaches elementary school children the fundamentals of philosophy. Both experiences carries in his writings, as he is able to express complex thoughts cogently to experts and laymen alike. As for Tiezen is expertise as both a logician, mathematician and phenomenologist makes his especially qualified to speak on Husserl's mathematics. Half of professor Tiezen's time is spent with freshmen in introductory classes. The other half working with ornry graduate students like myself. Both men's ability to teach high and low shows in their writings, making the Companion a pleasure to read.

Husserl on Mathematics
By Richard Tieszen
The Cambridge Companion to Husserl contains essays by various Husserl scholars who attempt to show the relevance of Husserl's ideas to many recent issues in philosophy. Barbosa says that I seem to ignore Husserl's ideas of categorial intuition and categorial abstraction and to characterize Husserlian mathematical epistemology in terms of detecting invariants in the flow of experience. Evidently Barbosa did not read the paper very carefully. Footnote 17 gives some examples of places to look in Husserl's writings for the view that ideal objects (including mathematical objects) are to be understood as invariants through the variations in our cognitive acts and processes. Many more citations to Husserl's works could be added to this footnote. In my paper I do not use the terms 'categorial intuition' and 'categorial abstraction'. So I am guilty of not using these terms but I am not guilty of failing to discuss the ideas of intuition and abstraction in mathematics. There are many technical Husserlian terms that I do not use in the paper. I do use the terms 'intuition' and 'abstraction'. In places where I use these terms and describe Husserl's views on mathematical intuition and the abstractions, idealizations and formalizations involved in mathematics, I also cite Husserl's texts on categorial intuition and categorial abstraction. An attentive reviewer would only need to see footnotes 16, 19 and 24. Open Husserl's Logical Investigations, for example, to sections 40-58 and read the Chapter title: Sensuous and Categorial Intuitions.

About Language: Tasks for Teachers of English (Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald), by Scott Thornbury

Teachers of English need not only to have a good productive command of the language; they also need to know a good deal about the way the language works. This book asks: 'What is it that a teacher needs to know about English in order to teach it effectively?' It leads teachers to awareness of the language through a wide range of tasks which involve them in analysing English to discover its underlying system. The book consists of 28 units, each containing around ten tasks, plus a diagnostic introductory unit. Units start at phoneme level and progress through words, phrases and sentences on to complete texts. Task-types include recognition, categorisation, matching, explanation, and application tasks. Throughout the book, the language is illustrated wherever possible from authentic sources, so that the teacher can be sure that the English being studied represents current usage.

Review
'Scott Thornbury's book is a major contribution to this understanding, process and strategy. About Language is definitely a book worth recommending to all teachers, both those with considerable experience and novices.' Folia Linguistica Anglica, Poland, 1999

'The book provides a great wealth of ideas and strategies, for use in teacher development programs ... The author and the publisher are to be congratulated on the production of such a useful book, which will be a valuable addition to the professional libraries of teachers and teacher educators.' VATME Newsletter, 1997

'I would have given my right arm for this book when I first entered the world of EFL. There are plenty of books that discuss what and how we should teach, and we seem to be swimming in books on grammar . What we don't have, however, are books designed to ease the novice teacher into the intimidating world of EFL 'grammarese'. About Language fill this gap. It is about the tools of our job: syllabuses, rules, functions, notions texts, phonology, morphology, sentences, grammar, cohesion, conversation and more.' BBC English, 1997

'I really felt that I was reading a book that has been written by somebody actively involved in the profession.' BBC English, 1997

'The book targets teacher trainees - indeed has been extensively trialled with classes of student teachers - but is also of value to teachers in any developmental program, native and non-native speakers, senior staff preparing inservice seminars and teachers in self-study. I have used it in a 'grammar clinic' context and found it both lucid and effective.' ' ... this is probably not a book that one would slavishly follow from Unit One onwards, but rather one that allows a dip-into-according-to-current-need approach. Recognising this, the organisation of the book facilitates the reference process; it is a model of clarity, and its index is a welcome addition.' 'Thornbury knows as much about how people learn about their language as he does about the language of English.' EA Journal Volume 15 no 2

Best Grammar for TESOL - Enough but Not Too Much
By D. B. Hopkins
This is simply the best grammar for teachers of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL), or anyone who wants to learn about conventional English language structure. It is a "task" oriented text, with challenging exercises for each section of the book. I have used this book as a reference and guide for TESOL certificate training for more than 12 years with more than 2500 teachers, and simply can't imagine anything better. It describes standard grammar clearly with transparent examples, and minimal metalanguage and labels. It is exactly what the teacher needs to be able to "highlight" the language forms and functions for students without immersing the students and the reader in "buzz" words that are often out-of-date. There will be critics who disagree, and those who think there should have been more included, but this is the strength of this book - just enough, but not too much. His treatment of the verb system of English, dividing the forms & functions into "tense" and "aspect" gives clarity to an area that is fraught with conflicting ideas. In similar fashion he leads us through word classes, simple sentences, complex sentences, modality, voice, conditionals, phrasals and on. In every case, enough to highlight form & function, but not so much as to confuse and obscure. He has successfully treated English grammar with Occam's Razor!

About Language

Scott Thornbury Cambridge University Press 16th printing 2010 The book will introduce you to the study of language, to terminology, methods, and theories. It will absorb you in thought about how you teach or would like to be teaching. There is more information in the keys than in the chapters. That's because you are looking through a series of tasks that will help you to receive all this input about being a teacher in these times. I have the book as a companion to a course called Language Awareness. This book will heighten your awareness of the language and your ability to be a better language teacher, no matter which language you teach.
