Tu Fu is, by universal consent, the greatest poet of the Chinese tradition. In the epochal An Lushan rebellion, he alone of his contemporaries consistently recorded in poetry the great events and pervasive sufferings of the time. For a millennium now, Tu Fu's poetry has been accepted as epitomizing the Chinese moral conscience at its highest, and as such his work has been placed almost beyond the reach of criticism. Indeed, objectivity about Tu Fu has often been viewed as criticism of him. In Reconsidering Tu Fu, Eva Shan Chou proposes that these thorny problems be met by separating his legacy into two distinct but related aspects: as cultural monument and as a great and original poet. Examining Tu Fu as cultural icon, she investigates the evolution and nature of his reputation and shows its continuing effect upon interpretations of his poetry. In her discussions of the poetic legacy, she introduces concepts relating to subject matter, style, genre, structure, theme, and voice, in order to provide for a fruitful reconsideration of his poetry. Not only this book is a book of history, but also a book of poetry. Tu Fu, through his poems, history of his contemporary time was also revealed. Professor Chou has also analyzed thoroughly on the structure of the poems. I highly recommand this book for anyone who is doing a research in historical Chinese poetries.

Pickering (social sciences, Pace Univ.) begins in 1798, the year of Comte's birth, and closes in 1842, when the sixth and final volume of Course of Positive Philosophy was published. With considerable skill and a thorough knowledge of the sources, she documents Comte's early life and difficulties and places his ideas within the context of the intellectual history of post-Revolutionary France and of the work of such contemporaries as John Stuart Mill and Saint-Simon. As the founder of sociology, positivism, and the history of science, Auguste Comte was arguably the most important nineteenth century French philosopher. Yet he has been curiously neglected. Based upon ten years of research, including three years of archival work in Paris, Mary Pickering's projected two-volume study constitutes the first comprehensive intellectual biography of this thinker. This first volume covers the period from his birth to the completion of the seminal Cours de philosophie positive and places Comte's evolution within the context of post-revolutionary France. It shows that Comte, reacting to the cataclysmic upheavals of his time, developed sociology as a way to unify society. He conceived the new doctrine of positivism to serve as its basis and to eliminate the questionable abstractions of conventional philosophy. The book examines the interplay between Comte's controversial intellectual development and the vicissitudes of his personal and professional life. It highlights his struggles with poverty and mental illness, his failed marriage to a so-called prostitute and his violent confrontations with the government and the scientific community. At the same time, it investigates his volatile relationships with his family, friends, and disciples, as well as with such famous contemporaries as Saint-Simon, the Saint-Simonians, Guizot, and John Stuart Mill. Pickering challenges the traditional view of Comte as an arid, simplistic thinker. According to her, he always emphasized the importance of the emotions and distrusted the scientistic approach that now is paradoxically associated with positivism. She thus demonstrates that his later religious direction did not constitutea break with his early beliefs but represented their logical outcome.

a good summary of the Philosopher's life and thoughts

Very good summary. Pickering captures the compelxity of the intellectual traditions that affected the formation of the Comtean philosophy. She shows the continuity that stems from the ambiguous legacy of the Revolution. But, at the same time, by concentrating on the continuity of his thought, Pickering does not seem to fully account for the discrepancy over which some of the disciples of Comte had to break from the master. Maybe in her next volume, she would make a good case of it.

Well worth reading today as the view of a great evolutionary biologist

John Maynard Smith’s book dates originally from 1958, with new editions in 1966 and 1975. The main text of the Canto edition of 1993 is the same as that of 1975 but is has a new Foreword (by Richard Dawkins), and a new Introduction (by the author), which begins “I was at first reluctant to agree to the re-issuing of this book.” So the question any potential reader will want to answer is why it might be worthwhile reading a book from 40 years ago: surely it must be completely out of date after that amount of time? There are two answers to this.

First, it is not as out of date as one might think. There have, of course, been major advances in molecular biology since 1975, but these are less important than one might guess, because the basic outlines of the coding for proteins by DNA, and translation into protein, remain essentially as John Maynard Smith described them. From the point of view of evolution the main thing that is missing is the separation of bacteria into Archaea and Eubacteria, important because the present view is that the Archaea (mostly extremophiles living at very high temperatures, or in other extreme condiitions) are closer relatives to ourselves than are the Eubacteria, something no one would have guessed. This reclassification was not known at the time the book was written, or even when the new Introduction to the Canto edition was written. In addition, the author’s speculations about the origin of life are still speculations, but so are those of everyone else, despite a lot of work. However, if you want to read about John Maynard Smith’s later views on this you can find a very accessible account in his book The Origins of Life: From the Birth of Life to the Origin of Language written with Eörs Szathmáry.

Much of the book, in any case, is not really out of date at all. The accounts of speciation and the relationships between species are still valid, and despite the discovery of new fossils the discussion of the fossil evidence remains worth reading. Melanism in moths is well known; rather less so is the more complicated story of colour and banding in land snails: long thought to have no evolutionary significance, careful study in the field showed that in fact the different patterns and colours of the cells affect the vulnerability of the snails to being eaten by thrushes, and are different in different environments.

The other reason for reading the book today is that John Maynard Smith was one of the greatest evolutionary biologists of the 20th century, and his views are well worth reading about: we should continue reading about them for the same reason we should continue reading the works of Charles Darwin.

Good, but today slightly dated.

Although I do not always agree with his views, I quite like Maynard Smith, so I rushed to buy this book which at its price seemed a real gem. Well, just to caution the reader that while it is classic Maynard Smith, the book is now quite old (1975). One can say that Darwin's 1859 classic, or "Selfish Gene" (1976) is also old, but these books were a milestone at the time. This book had less impact as a classic, so if one just needs latest information in a fast moving topic, there are more up-to-date works around. Even Maynard Smith's own (1998) "The Origins of Life" would be better value. You have to use your own judgement about this one.

Pros and cons...

The purpose of this book is to provide a basic overview of the theory of evolution for the layperson. If you have never studied the theory of evolution, or if you have a basic understanding of the basic theory of natural selection but are fuzzy on the details, Maynard Smith's book does a good job walking through the basics. The major pro of the book, in my opinion, is its breadth of coverage. Smith begins with a basic account of the idea of adaptation and the theory of natural selection. Smith then discusses a wide range of topics within evolutionary biology: the molecular genetics of heredity, the role of DNA, the origins of life, the control of gene action in the production of proteins, the evolution of altruism and social behavior, and the process of speciation. Most of the major topics within evolutionary biology get a chapter devoted to them so the book serves as a good general introduction to the overall theory of evolution. It does not go in depth on any one topic but the reader will get a good general survey of the field.

There are, in my opinion, two cons of the book. One was already mentioned by a previous reviewer. The book is a bit old. For example, since this book was published there have been developments in complexity theory that have opened up new avenues in our attempt to understand the origins of life, and there have been developments in the field now known as EvoDevo that have increased our understanding of the control of gene action and its role in evolution. Readers looking for good books that cover some of those developments could look at At Home in the Universe: The Search for the Laws of Self-Organization and Complexity by Stuart Kauffman, and Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo by Sean Carroll. The second con is, the book can be a bit dull. It feels a little bit like reading a textbook. The information is good but it does not really make for exciting reading.

I think the field of evolutionary biology is actually a really exciting and interesting field. The field is exciting because we are learning so much at a relatively fast rate. There is also an inherent beauty to the theory of natural selection, and the way that life operates, and writers who are able to capture that beauty are able to inform while also exciting the imagination. Maynard Smith does not, in my opinion, quite succeed in making the theory of evolution as exciting as I think it is. Unfortunately, being a layperson in the field of biology, I am not aware of any other general introductions to the theory of evolution that, 1) manage to pack as much information in as Smith, and 2) make for exciting reading. If I find one I will update my review and recommend it in place of Smith's book. Until then, I would still recommend Smith's book for anyone who wants a broad introduction to the overall field of evolutionary biology. It serves that purpose quite well. Once the reader has that broad overview they can focus in on more specific topics. There are lots of exciting books on specific topics, like the two I referenced above.

Fairly comprehensive treatment of one small part of topic

This mis-named book is about nothing other than the application of economic decision-making frameworks to farm management decisions. It says nothing about the context - social, institutional, political, economic, external - of Australian agriculture, nor does it say anything about how to raise animals or grow crops, nor will it help policy analysts in applying social cost-benefit analysis. On the other hand, it is a very comprehensive treatment of its chosen topic, and demonstrates that even techniques of a high level of conceptual sophistication can be applied to practical farm management decisions. The non-treatment of ecological sustainability issues will raise the ire of many - particularly the curtly inappropriate dismissal of agro-forestry. Sustainability issues can be incorporated into the decision-making framework recommended by the authors - indeed, doing so would have aided their message, as long as the discussion of time preference - discounting etc - was also adjusted to recognise the different "discount rates" that should apply to sustainability issues.

To date the study of T. S. Eliot's development has traditionally posed one major obstacle: the problem of connecting the periods before and after his religious conversion. What does the young aesthetic revolutionary and author of The Waste Land have to do with the later champion of Christian orthodoxy? Faced with this problem, scholarly inquiry has for the most part agreed that a radical rupture took place in 1927, as Eliot's skepticism was overcome in one leap of faith. Such a view, however, obscures the history of Eliot's political commitment - which was in fact of longer standing and more deeply seated than has previously been acknowledged. In T. S. Eliot and Ideology, Kenneth Asher argues instead for a strongly continuous Eliot, an Eliot whose work from beginning to end was shaped by a vision inherited from a French reactionary tradition that culminated with Charles Maurras.
