Good for ESOL instructors

This text contains short lessons on at least a hundred common concepts in English, with straightforward, everyday examples.
In the appendix, there is the best-organized list of irregular verbs I've seen. The verbs are categorized according to their irregularity, so that the patterns can be studied. Each of my students has a copy that (s)he refers to often.
The Table of Contents is spectacular. Each topic is broken into several different units, which are each well-described. I find this organization particularly helpful when a student mentions (s)he is having trouble understanding, say, the use of the present progressive to express the future. I thumb through the contents, and in seconds, I know to show Unit 20. Especially helpful if you and the student don't know that it's called the present progressive, just that people say "I am playing tennis tomorrow." Waste no time flipping through the index of another book only to find it a dead-end.
Lastly, the sections on prepositions (which are so difficult to teach) are wonderful. We have teachers who won't use anything else and students who have found them very helpful.

It's an excellent book which will help you to keep in touch with the correct english grammar. If you aren't a native english speaker and you want to learn english language , don't worry!!! this book is going to help you with your studies, it is going to clear any grammar misunderstanding.This could be considered as an english handbook. And if you are a native english grammar you could use this book too, because sometimes you might need to clear some grammar rules to
speak "your best english".

The Khoisan are a cluster of southern African peoples which include the famous Bushmen, or San, 'hunters', the Khoekhoe 'herders' (in the past called 'Hottentots'), and the Damara, also a herding people. The present-day Khoisan include hunter-gatherers, pastoralists, and wage labourers. In spite of differences associated with their economic pursuits, as well as differences in language and other aspects of culture, the Khoisan peoples share features of territorial organization, gender relations, kinship, ritual, and cosmology. These represent elements of structures held in common across economic, cultural, linguistic, and 'racial' boundaries. This book focuses on these structures and the diverse forms which they take within Khoisan culture and society. It is written within the framework of regional structural comparison.

Thank You Mr Wiltshire!

This is a book primarily for scholars of Jane Austen but it does contain material that is interesting for readers who wish to learn more about Jane Austen's novels, in particular the way she deals with the issue of illness. John Wiltshire makes some very interesting points about Louisa Musgrove's fall at Lyme in Persuasion. He understands it to be a crucial moment for Captain Wentworth's future as a husband: will it be Louisa bold and brash or will it be Anne sensible and faithful? He has much to say on Marianne Dashwood's illness in Sense and Sensibilit, in regard to her relationship with Willoughby, which is most helpful in understanding why her character alters so significantly at the end of the novel. Being a previous student of John Wiltshire's, I was pleased to come upon this book and relate it back to his class. I gained some very helpful hints in understanding Jane Austen's incredible insight into human nature from this book and I hope that many more will find it as worthwhile.

Information is just scattered everywhere. The history of Africa is complex and beautiful; it is a daunting task to attempt to put so much information in 1 book. I feel perhaps instead of making different sections in the book, Isichei may have been better off making multiple books detailing the history of Africa and its regions.

About the Author
Lois Bloom (Ph.D., Columbia University, 1968) is an Edward Lee Thorndike Professor Emeritus pf Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research interests have centered on early language acquisition, in general, and the part played by developments in emotion and cognition, in particular, on language development.

Erin Tinker (M.A., New York University, 1990; M.A., Teachers College, Columbia University, 1993) is a Learning Specialist at the Trinity School in New York City.

LOIS HOLZMAN is Associate Professor of Psychology at Empire State College and a member of the faculty at The East Side Institute for Short-term Psychotherapy.
