Gunton's thesis is that the doctrine of the Trinity, specifically in the concept of perichoresis, sheds light on the relational nature of all created reality and can serve as a conceptual model for the restoration of fragmented modern culture. In the perichoretic maintenance-in-tension of the one God and the three Persons, we find a model for a balanced integration of truth, goodness, and beauty in culture that is both unified and particular, coherent and true to diversity. As Gunton puts it (177): "But just as a unitarily conceived ultimate reality encourages fragmentation [reviewer note: i.e., by right, rebellious insistence on the reality and value of the particular], so by contrast a God conceived trinitarianly, a God who contains within himself a form of plurality in relation and creates a world which reflects the richness of his being, can surely enable us better to conceive something of the unity in variety of human culture."
The book is in 8 chapters (originally lectures), arranged, as Gunton notes explicitly (e.g., 130), chiastically: the problems described in chap.1 are resolved in chap. 8; the problems of chap. 2 are resolved in chap. 7; etc.

The Particular as Relationality

Gunton's thesis is that Modernity plays the one and many against each other (6). Antiquity and modernity are alike in having defective accounts of relationality. Third, the fragmentation of the three transcendentals (begun with Plato) makes the modern world an uneasy world. Understanding that modernity is difficult to define, Gunton sees it as a family of dogmas best represented in the French and Russian Revolutions. What modernity gives us is "displacement," shifting transcendentals from God to the world (or something like it).

Yet this book is not merely a screed against modernity. Modernity is best seen as parasitic upon and in reaction to the ancient Christian tradition. Indeed, some moments of modernity, while wrong, could not have gotten off of the ground if not for ambiguities in the Christian tradition (e.g., a privileging of Plato, etc).

Gunton uses Parmenides and Heraclitus as two symbols of dealing with the problem of One and Many. Gunton calls these two approaches “a coincidence of opposites” (18). Without the mediation of a third factor they collapse into each other. The ancient Western tradition *tended* to favor monism over dualism (there were exceptions). Gunton suggests this could be due to substance-metaphysics, that the real substance of God is what lies beneath and behind the persons (191).

The early Christian tradition, by contrast, provided a model for overcoming this--best seen in Irenaeus. ecapitulation gives time itself validity before eternity (von Balthasar, quoted in Gunton 159). It gives us a conception of God’s acting in and through the world which is diversified within fundamental unity: wordly happening is now diversified and open because it is embraced by eternity. Economy embraces the being of the world in its relation to God and the action of God in relation to the world. The economy is the way God constitutes reality. He makes it what it is through the activities we call creation and redemption.

In conclusion the substantiality of God should not reside in an abstract being, but in concrete particulars that we call divine persons and in the relations in which they mutually constitute one another (191). Gunton has some beautiful meditations and suggestions on spirit and perichoresis, but I must note a few criticisms:

* I feel uneasy about his saying the Persons of the Trinity constitute each other by relations. There is a truth, there, but the statement is misleading. I repeat Volf's criticism of Zizioulas: Zizioulas distinguishes between being constituted (the Son and the Spirit through the Father) and the Father being conditioned (The Father by the Son and the Spirit). If one presumes that the Father alone is the constituitive entity within the Godhead, then, as we have already seen, it is difficult not to ascribe priority to the person before the communion. If, on the other hand, one takes seriously the notion of the Father as conditioned by the Son and the Spirit, then the differences between the persons risk being leveled. If the Father is conditioned by the Son and the Spirit, then he is constituted by them. That is, he is God only as Father. As soon as one allows innertrinitarian reciprocity, the innertrinitarian asymmetry seems to vanish (After Our Likeness, 80).

In short, whatever their genius, I don't think the Cappadocians can fully deliver by themselves.

* He suggests we should see Ideas in Coleridge's sense as the transcendental that unites One and Many. Maybe so, but this tends to move the discussion back to priority of the One.

* I agree with all of Gunton's criticisms of Augustine, yet after a while we see increasingly few citations of Augustine following criticisms of Augustine.

His analysis of the cultural shift reaches back to pre-Christian philosophy, from Idealism to the reality of relationships. The book is not an easy read, but for those who want to think about the course of the American culture, it is informative and stimulating.

fails to convince

Research about linguistic relativity promises fascinating reading. Unfortunately, the majority of articles in the book are dry, dusty and full of overly academic language. The only piece really worth reading is Bowerman's article on the spacial categories of children which shows how differences in the perception of spacial relationsships (up/down, into, out of...) are linguistically encoded.

Excellent papers

This anthology of Kim's papers is really fundamental to anyone willing to study the metaphysics of mind. There are also papers on causality, events and epistemology. However, the core of the book is the seminal work laid by Kim on supervenience and its relation to the mind-body problem.
I really cannot believe how can Kim manage to be at the same precise, technical and transparently clear. Some of the papers contained in here are already classics in the field. I have learned A LOT from Kim. I hope you benefit from his work as I have.

The Theology of W. R. Telford

Telford's treatment of the theology of Mark's gospel follows an expected pattern - introduction, theology, place in canon, relevance for today - but seems to entirely miss the point of the series of books of which this one is a part.
Telford's style and format are excellent. He constantly moves in linear progression from one thought to the next, building his arugments and then summarizing where he has just taken the reader before tranisitioning to the next topic. By far he has done a much better job of maintaining focus and coherency than many other writings in this series. And for this reason he gets two stars and not one.
Professor Telford seems to exemplify what Kierkergaard wrote concerning the biblical scholars of his day - that most scholarship is an attempt not to know and understand the NT more intimately but instead to put more and more padding between it and oneself. Telford seems to make all the right arugments concerning Mark's composition, theology and place in the canon and yet seems so far from the message that Mark has to give. It is as if Telford were constructing an enormous jigsaw puzzle but, when completed, didn't care for the picture it created.
Telford's overriding thurst is that Mark's gospel was written to combat what the author saw as errant christologies by replacing it with a Son of God Christology. The use of the secret motif, the debate with the Jewish opponents, and the disciples inability are all supposed to point to this supreme center.
However, I find Telford's construction tedious at best. Assuming that literary criticism and redactional methods (among other tools) enable historical truth, he makes assumptions that I find hard to maintain. The confidence he places in viewing so much of Mark through his christological lens, for example, is found wanting when he makes virtually no effort to explain his preponderance for assuming not only the existence of Q - the hypothetical source that he admits is hypothetical - but also its exact content to the extent that it can be compared with Mark's final product. Furthermore, his insistence on "the historical Jesus" over and against the evangelist's presentation comes across as veiled smugness that anyone would believe such mythic nonsense.
In reality, it is not hard to see why Telford has so little interest is Jesus - historical or otherwise. His specialty is in Christian Origins and he treats the whole of this book as though he were writing the history of the early church. It is utterly apparent that Telford has a strong inclination toward seeing not only a competing Jewish/Gentile Christianity (no doubt reminsicent of Bauer's theory) but to a clash of nearly every early Christian movement with another. His treatment on Mark in the canon is no less than a thorough look at every book in the NT (with little real interest in comparing it with Mark) and how they all compete with one another. Telford is doing Christian Origins in this book!
Finally, his treatment on Mark's relevance for today is laughable. On staff with a church I find his input completely useless. In fact, he hardly refers to the church at all, maintaining that since Mark was written in such an alien environment it has little bearing on today's world. Moving on to the secular world he does little more than ask questions and provide no answer. Does Mark promote or denigrate women? Well, we don't know. Does Mark promote anti-Semitism? Well, who's to say? Does Mark promote non-violent resistance? Too hard to tell. It is clear that Telford has no interest in Mark's message at all apart from what it can tell him about the schematization of early Christianity.
In the end it is clear that the academy's insights to church documents provide little in the way of help to the church itself when the academy is indifferent (or hostile) to the message of the church. As should be clear, I would not suggest this book and will only keep it to have a complete collection of the New Testament Theology series which as otherwise proved very good overall so far.

some good information, not great theology

Telford's theology on Mark starts with a brief discussion on the historical setting of the Gospel of Mark, followed by a lengthy section speaking directly on Markan theology, a contrast of Mark and the rest of the New Testament, and finally a section dealing with the impact of Mark on history up to contemporary times.

He focuses a great deal on the historical setting of Mark and his community, though Telford does not conclude who that really was. He also speaks about pre-Markan tradition and then Mark's literary and theological achievement of more than a simple compiler, a creator in his own right.

Telford begins his theology with discussion on the person of Jesus, showing Mark's Christology as a continuation of traditional views of Jesus but focusing more on the Son of Man than Son of David or Messiah. Next we see him discussing the message of Jesus. Telford believes that Mark interprets Jesus' teachings in a "realized" eschatological manner, thus providing an apocalyptic hope for primitive Jewish Christianity that defines, in secret, his understanding of the Kingdom of God.

He then writes about Mark's presentation of Jesus' mission showing how Mark's editing - selection, arrangement, and modification of material - furthers his Christological and soteriological aims which include the presentation of Jesus as the concealed unique son of God, closer to the Divine Man of Hellenistic thought rather than a Jewish Messianic figure.

In his section dealing the purpose of Mark, Telford highlights the secrecy motif; the passion of Jesus; the Kingdom of God and Jesus as the Son of Man; Galilee; the term "Gospel;" Gentiles discipleship as expressed by persecution, suffering and martyrdom; and Jesus harsh treatment of Jews.

For a book about the theology of Mark, Telford fails to deliver a good "theology of Mark." He has some good ideas, no doubt, in the section titled "The Theology of Mark," but little that is new to the subject. He adds a great deal of superfluous information while he scantly treats worthwhile subjects and he is extremely repetitious.

The section on the historical setting added nothing new to the genre. His style makes it difficult to follow a main thought. More could have been said about Jesus' historical setting and too much is said about the Markan community, with Telford unable to decide for himself if Mark wrote to a community in Rome, Galilee or Syria nor able to discern what propelled his writing in the first place.

His best work comes in the section in which he compares Mark's Gospel to other New Testament writing, but herein he is not developing a theology, just comparing one. In this section his repeated contrast of theologia gloriae against theologia crucis is the best work of the book, especially as his view that the evangelist critiques abusive power. He could have done more on this theme especially in the theology section.
In the final section, Telford often makes the mistake of trying to fit Mark's gospel around a contemporary mindset and not the opposite. For example, he has a hard trying applying the Markan Jesus to complex contemporary issues such as in the case of Markan Jesus' harsh stance against divorce in a contemporary world where divorce is acceptable and rampant. Should not the application be done in reverse? Mark was not writing his theology for the 21st century. He wrote his theology first as a testament to Christ and closely associated with that to a specific community in his day. If this Gospel possesses timeless truths, should not the contemporary world apply itself over and against the Markan Jesus and not the other way around?

Telford does not add much new discussion on Markan theology, and what he has written is confusing at times and repetitious throughout. This is not worth reading if one seeks to understand Markan theology. On the other hand, Telford's last section is recommended when comparing Mark to other New Testament writers.

Slightly dated scholarship for the penny-wise

This is an able commentary to Dante, but make sure you are clear on which edition you are purchasing: the most recent (as of this review) is a March 2007 version. Sufficient edits, insights and scholarly arguments (let's not quite call them developments) exist in the 14 years between publications to make it worth being certain what you're buying before you buy.

Then again - the 1993 edition is available used for under three bucks, while the 2007 edition ranges from $25 to $50. So... choose your priority.

Open my eyes that I may see

I'm just finishing my first reading of the Divine Comedy. Before tackling this daunting work I went to a good college library and checked out 5 books: The Burton Raffel translation; The Cambridge Companion to Dante (ed. by Rachel Jacoff - focus of this review); The Dante Encyclopedia edited by Richard Lansing; Images of the Journey in Dante's Divine Comedy by Taylor and Finley; and Understanding Dante by John Scott. All were very helpful and I switched back and forth as I read the Dante text. The Raffel text flows nicely and Dante explains his experiences well, but I would be sailing along in the story line then suddenly thinking, I have no idea what Dante is talking about here. The reference books and the Intro and Notes in the Raffel were an attention saver. Dante often launches into deep, detailed discussions without warning or explanation.

It was helpful to go to a great collection of artistic images to get pictures in my mind, so I could visualize what Dante was writing. I was sustained by the almost comic 15th C. picture of Beatrice literally shooting darts at Dante with her eyes, tipping him over with her glance of love, the power of her gaze. Taylor and Finley have organized their work in such a way that it is simple to go right to the part of the Commedia the reader is working on. The Dante Encyclopedia provided scholarly, helpful explanations of the meriad details Dante employs.

As to The Cambridge Companion to Dante, I found the articles by the editor/author especially helpful. She provides easy-to-understand discussions of the basic story and the MEANING AND POINT of what Dante is saying. There is an enormous amount of symbolism and the character, Beatrice, is the primary actor - everything leads to God through Beatrice. But it is easy to forget this because she does not actually appear in the text until the end of Purgatorio. Yet her role is continually referenced.

With such good resources as The Cambridge Companion to Dante by Rachel Jacoff an enjoyable and spiritually enriching experience is all but assured.

Poetic Justice

It is just and right that the greatest poem the world has known, the subject of which is a journey requiring able guides, would itself require able guides for profitable reading. "The Cambridge Companion to Dante" has several Virgils, a Beatrice (editor and contributor Rachel Jacoff), and a St. Bernard of Clairvaux (A. N. Williams.) Though these are obviously playful comparisons, it is undeniable that the contributors to this volume cover most of what is needed to better understand the Comedia. Rachel Jacoff's "Introduction to Paradiso", which provides much-needed insight for that most difficult canticle of the poem, and A.N. Williams' "The theology of the Comedy", which brings the reader 'home', beginning with his succinct opening sentence, "The Comedy is a poem of ends", are especially helpful.

Another reviewer states that the scholarship of this offering is somewhat dated; if by dated, he means that it has little of the current fashion in criticism, some of which has spiraled off into the outright bizarre and strange, then I would agree. This reviewer, however, found the essays and criticisms fresh, interesting, and very useful.

Rachel Jacoff's essay on the Paradiso was probably the most helpful of this collection. She gives detail and insights on each heavenly sphere so that the reader of the poem is able to follow the recurrent themes from the earlier canticles, as well as the images and symbolism distinct to the Paradiso. Jacoff does an excellent job in outlining the model and explaining that "the souls are not literally assigned to the spheres, but, as Beatrice explains, they 'show themselves' in the hierarchy of the spheres in order to... signify the nature and grade of their beatitude."

"The impossibility of directly rendering that reality", Jacoff continues, leads us to borrow St. Bonaventure's terminology: "shadows, echoes, and pictures... vestiges, images, and displays presented to us for the contuition of God", contuition being a term coined by Bonaventure to describe the knowing of one thing in the course of knowing a first object. Knowing the essence of a creature, for instance, is the occasion for understanding something about God.

Toward the end of the essay Jacoff has a discussion on why St. Bernard serves as Dante's final guide, and it involves the Blessed Virgnin Mary, which I think Catholics will find edifying.

I recommend this work for the Dante section of any bookshelf.
