As a result, the relation of the images of human suffering produced by Jacob Riis, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, Russell Lee, et al. to viewers' response never comes alive. A pity, for this subject deserves a wider circle of readers who would expect the tight connection between disturbing image and collective response to be broadened rather than concealed in dense text. this is not a book about Photography or photographers

This is a book written around the photos of the social reform campaigns and farm security administration Photography Project. Few pages about the photographers or their photos, with only one exception Jacob Riis in the first chapter. It is more a book about how the Farm program use Photography as a communication tool to reach mass audience, and give materials to prestigious Magazines and newspapers, that support the government social reforms. All this anyway gives a massive audience to a directed, politically elaborated, not spontaneous type of photography that later make its way in the Photography history as a social documentary style. This history speak about the most famous photographers that shortly participate in the programs, and then quit, because they feel they are not doing the kind of photography work they pretend to do as artist.
If you are looking for photos of that time, history of the documentary photographers like Evans, Dorothea Lange or others it is not the book for you. If you are looking for a critic and history of centralized government communication campaigns of the social reform since 1900 to the world war times, it is the book for you.

Engagement- the downfall of corporate America- is flow

In this book, readers will find the first well-researched proof that engaging with life is within anyone's control and that it is not more easily attained when the task is easy or leisurely. In cross-cultural studies, Csikszentmihalyi and contributors demonstrate that anyone can access the 'flow' state.

Early in his work and writings, this particular book provides descriptions of the optimal experience state that was named 'flow' in later works. The point, in my mind's eye, is that anyone can get there and that external rewards or the quality of the experience are not the critical factors for whether we engage- nor is some innate talent or socioeconomic level.

Csikszentmihalyi's work was the basis of my own work while teaching at Dartmouth Med School and, then, for the work I have done consulting to peak performers on the competitive fields of sports and business, politics, medicine, and law. It is also the basis for The Winner's Way (McGraw-Hill 2004) The Winner's Way : A proven method for achieving your personal best in any situation in which I outline how peak performers in sport get into the zone and how anyone can use three elements within their control to engage with the power of heart, brain - and energy to get it done and to achieve your goals.

Given that this was the start of work on 'flow'- Gallup and Towers and Perrin call it 'engagement', the book stands on its own as a solid 5-star read.

To understand what is the flow state

I buy this book in order to know knowledge abot the flow state and how to achieve the flow state. Now, I have obtained more related information about the flow from this book. However, I still don't konw how to reach the flow state in my life.

Second, manipulation of soil ecology through biotechnology is discussed, illustrating the use of pesticides and microbial inocula in soils and pointing toward the future by considering the impact of genetically modified inocula on soil ecology.

One of the best books about Cosmic Rays Astrophysics

The two volumes of "High Energy Astrophysics" by M.S. Longair are amongst my favourite books: I read them several times and every time I found interesting hints for my work. I'm waiting for the third volume for 3 years, but it's still missing from the bookshelf...
The first volume ("Particles, Photons and Their Detection") focuses on the interactions between high energy particles and matter, in order to help the reader to understand how detectors work. The theoretical approach is deep enough not to hide the "dirty" steps of the calculations, and some subsection requires good mathematical skills (well, not as much as for Russian books ;-).
The second volume ("Stars, the Galaxy and Interstellar Medium") focuses on the Physics of cosmic rays (CR) while they run through the Galaxy. The author takes the occasion to explain several very exciting items, from the proposed mechanisms of CR acceleration and high energy photons emission, to the diffusion through the interstellar medium and the Solar wind, untill the CR reach the Earth. Special emphasis is given to open problems -- only very few of them were solved in the meantime (Nov. 2001).
The 2 volumes are well suited for advanced students in Physics or Astronomy, and are a good reference for researchers.

Good book, but outdated 14 years later

We used this book for a graduate course on High Energy Astrophysics. As I recall, there were a fair number of mistakes (like "Fermi's Exclusion Principle"), but overall I found it quite informative. However, modern astrophysics is rapidly changing, and you should not spend money on a book that is so out dated on many topics. Buy something new and borrow this one from the library if you get the urge.

Almost misleading in the title, but okay enough for what it presents.

This book is less concerned with actually solving numerical PDEs and discussing the methodologies behind how we develop the methods we use to approach them (which, for an ever growing field, is an absolute necessity) than it is in tackling the analytical background behind boundedness, iteration schemes, geometry, and basically the problem itself.

To be simpler, the idea in this book is more "These are the conditions in which we can develop a numerical scheme, and this is a good numerical scheme to use given the conditions" than it is "This is how we develop a numerical scheme."

Which is a useful topic, but unfortunately if one tried to apply this to, say, a typical program or course in Computational Fluid Dynamics, well, this book can be completely skipped and one can come out of said program or course knowing more about contributing to research in numerical methods (in general, not just with applications to fluid dynamics) than this book could ever provide.

HOWEVER.

For the person who is fully aware of the nature of some problem and wishes to find some numerical scheme to come up with, say, a quick presentation of efficiency in how said problem's solution accurately reflects a given model or physical data, then this book is pretty good for that, but I'm convinced you can find a better book elsewhere. It just seems too narrow a focus. For that, I agree with the other reviewer who described topics as "ad hoc."

On the other hand, this book is pretty demanding. Presentation is not entirely clear and a strong knowledge of PDEs and analysis (more aligned with mathematical analysis than a typical student's first few semesters in numerical analysis) are largely assumed.

In summary, this book is more about the nature of PDEs and the existence of numerical schemes than actually constructing schemes. Yes, construction is done, but it's so glossed over it seems more of a footnote. And the focus is too narrow to be readily accessible for someone looking for some ideas into numerical PDE methods.

If you're a student just taking a class, fine, whatever. But if you're someone who for some reason has stumbled into something that needs to be solved and you're looking for insights into how numerical analysts approach PDEs, go somewhere else.

Newer is not necessarily better.

This book could be viewed as an abridged/updated version of the classic earlier text by the author. However, it has significantly less content than the earlier book. I'm not sure what to make of this book. No overall consistent theme. Some topics treated in an ad-hoc manner. The book is ok if you already know the material, but I can see that it would be difficult and confusing for a beginner in this field.

It appears to me that this book was written in order to remove all of the rigorous mathematical details of the Richtmyer and Morton book on Finite Difference Methods. I would not use this as a text for any course in numerical PDE. As strange as this may sound, books on CFD tend to do a better job at numerical analysis but a poor job at CFD! I would shop around until you find something you feel comfortable with. This one just doesn't do it for me.

Good Starter

This book is a good starter for understanding how to numerically solve (Partial Differential Equations)PDE's. The chapters are arranged in an orderly manner and hints are provided then and there so that you wont need to switch back and forth between them. I myself a researcher in the field of Finite Element Analysis, which extensively involves PDE's for implementing the Finite element model. A thorough knowlegde of PDE's and the nature of their solutions is very important for such fields. This book is definitely the one which describes the nature of PDE's solutions and their interpretation, boundedness and applicability.

"Long live our holy Germany" were the last words of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg on the night of July 20, 1944. Peter Hoffmann's magnificient book is a salute to the Stauffenberg brothers and most importantly Claus von Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg was the real thing, a man of deep Christian principles and extradionary courage who knew that the future of Germany was more important than his life and the life of his fellow conspirators. He made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live in freedom. Stauffenberg is not only a hero of Germany, but of anyone on earth who loves freedom and respects the laws of God and humanity. Stauffenberg was Germany's guardian angel, who attempted to save his nation and slay the man he deemed "the antichrist." Doctor Hoffmann paints a wonderful picture of Stauffenberg's early life and military career. He then moves into minute detail of the plot to kill Hitler and the man whom fate had chosen to lead it. Simply a great scholastic achievement.

Aside from being the single man in history to make several (and one very famous) attempts on the life of Adolf Hitler, Claus Von Stauffenberg was a unique guy.

Born in 1907 to Prussian aristocracy, Stauffenberg was playing the cello, reciting Shakespeare, and taking an interest in Catholic theology
by the age of exactly 12. Had he made a career out of any of these three, his fate would have been less cruel. Claus Von Stauffenberg, though, was a born soldier.

Ultimately becoming a General Staff officer in the German Abwehr, Stauffenberg and his brothers Berthold and Alexander still made considerable time for poet Stefan George, and were part of his "Secret Germany", a quasi-mystical poetic cult of sorts which worshipped George as "Master, and the three brothers were were prophesied by the poet manque as the future leaders of the Fatherland. Goethe, Holderlin, Rilke and Nietzsche were heralded as the predecessors of the movement. The problem with the entire affair was that George was not very talented and his literary salon was composed mostly of teenage boys.

Despite George, the slow but sure rise of the Third Reich (which, like most Germans, Stauffenberg initially welcomed and his inevitable participation in nearly all of Germany's military campaigns, Claus Von Stauffenberg always retained an odd detachment from his surroundings and a sense of self which was very strong.

The sheer wealth and richness of not only Stauffenberg's life, but the life of his wealthy and somewhat sheltered family--his career as a decorated soldier in the Wehrmacht, his prestige as a model, and as head of the General Staff office--makes his brutal death in front of the Bendleerstrasse in Germany a surreal and bizarre turn of events.

Stauffenberg was aware of Germany's imminent defeat, yet as early as 1942 he was making some quit imprudent remarks about the Fuhrer: "In August 1942 Stauffenberg told Major Joachim Kuhn, a close friend, that the treatment of the Jews and other civilians was monstrous, *that Hitler had lied about the cause of the war*, and that he had to be removed. He then shouted: "They are shooting Jews in the masses. These crimes must not be allowed to continue!"

Then in in another outbrust which later got him arrested, news of more atrocities sparked Stauffenberg to scream in front of SS and general staff alike:"Does not one German soldier have the courage to shoot that pig?"

Attempt after attempt failed; Stauffenberg was regularly seen carrying a "remarkably plump briefcase" (as Albert Speer put it) to three different meetings in Hitler's "Wolf's Lair" in Prussia. Once Hitler did not show up: the second time Stauffenberg's incompetent superiors instructed him to not to set the fuse, and the third time the bomb exploded and by sheer chance did not kill Hitler.

Even in the face of the Gestapo's considerable wrath, Stauffenberg did his best to get the coup de'etat to to succeed. In a most fortunate turn of events for Stauffenberg, probably, a General Staff officer involved in the plot turned on the other plotters and had a handful of them, Claus included, shot on the night of July 20, 1944.

Why? Why was such a priviliged and wealthy figure in the German army who would certainly never have been charged with war crimes choose to sacrifice his life, the life of his family and friends, in an attempt so tenuous and fraught with uncertainty?

The answer, I think, lies in Stauffenberg's unbelievable bravery, sense of common decency, and Christian background. Without these things he may indeed have been a terrifying force for the Third Reich. He could no longer stomach what was going on around him. Peter Hoffmann here gives the definitive biography of this heroic man who embodies perhaps the most inspiring example of "what might have been" in history. A must read.

Peter Hoffmann's biography of Stauffenberg is the best anyone is likely to write on the subject. The book comprehensively assesses all primary sources hitherto used by Stauffenberg's previous biographers, plus many additional sources which the author himself found. Hoffmann's previous books, among them 'THE HISTORY OF THE GERMAN RESISTANCE, 1933-1945', and 'HITLER'S PERSONAL SECURITY' serve as a foundation to this work which, all told, spans 30 years of scholarly research. As the depth and breadth of this study eclipses any other attempt to date, its conclusions are unassailably judicious. Thus, Hoffmann's 'STAUFFENBERG' has made perhaps the most definitive contribution to the historical field of resistance to the Third Reich.

Clever and witty play

Of all of Shakespeare's plays that I have read, this is the most enjoyable. The characters are real and engaging - the sweetly stupid Bianca and her hoard of suitors, Baptista, who is more interested in selling his daughters to rich husbands than making them happy, the sly and masterful Petruchio, and most of all, Katherine, the Shrew. The play is full of action, comedy, and enough mistaken and hidden identities to keep the reader happily confused.
Katherine, who appears to be "tamed" by Petruchio's cruelties, learns the art of subtlety and diplomacy that will enable her to survive in a society ruled by men. Her speech in the last scene is not a humbling affirmation of the superiority of men, but a tounge-in-cheek ridicule of Petruchio, Lucentio, and Hortensio, who think that a woman can be tamed like a wild animal by a few days of bumbling controll.
The Folger Library of Shakespeare's plays are the most readable editions that I have seen. There are detailed side notes and definitions of unfamiliar words, which are perfect for the reader who is not familiar with Shakespearean English.

Kiss me Kate, we will be married o' Sunday

"The Taming of the Shrew" is probably William Shakespeare's second most controversial play -- nobody can figure out if it's misogynistic or a biting double satire on the sexes. Whatever it is, it's still a witty and hilarious comedy that pits the titular "shrew" against a crazy guy determined to browbeat her into traditional subservience... and while they're no Beatrice and Benedick, it is lots of fun.

Framing device: a local lord and his hunting party stumble across a drunken tinker, and decide to play an elaborate prank on him. They dress him in rich clothes, arrange fine food for him, and even drag a protesting servant boy in to pretend to be his wife. And they put on a performance for him as well: Baptista Minola has two daughters, the hot-tempered razor-tongued Katharina and the quiet, demure Bianca.

Since Bianca is not allowed to marry until Katharina is, her suitors form an alliance to get the elder sister out of the way, which is made more complex when a young student named Luciento falls in love with Bianca, and comes up with a clever plan to woo her. Enter Petruchio, an impoverished nobleman with as sharp a wit as Katharina -- and since he's the only one willing to marry her, her father jumps on the chance. From the very beginning, Petruchio beats her over the head with crazy reverse psychology, a ridiculous wedding ceremony, and a honeymoon from hell.

It's often debated whether "The Taming of the Shrew" is a sexist play or not, since the strong-willed, independent Katharina ends up another little obedient wifie, lecturing the other wives on giving their husbands "love, fair looks and true obedience." Blech.

But consider: this speech comes from a woman who, after years of intimidating the men around her, has been browbeaten, emotionally abused and humiliated until her boorish hubby finally "breaks" her... not exactly a rousing celebration of "the taming of the shrew," or of Petruchio! If anything, Shakespeare seems to be hinting that women should be subtle about their rebellion (as Bianca is) rather than broadcasting it to the world... and perhaps that is what the "shrew" had really learned.

And as usual, Shakespeare wraps the play in delicious wordplay ("You lie, in faith; for you are call'd plain Kate,/And bonny Kate, and sometimes Kate the curst"), weird situations (the ridiculous wedding), and an farcical romantic tangle centering on Bianca. And Shakespeare has some fun with the framing device about Christopher Sly -- while the lord is being a jerk, the whole situation is just so hilarious that it's impossible not to enjoy it.

And the characters are pretty fun as well, even when you want to kick them in the backside -- Katharina is delightfully witty, bombastic and very intimidating, and Petruchio is a hilarious, witty jerk who knows just how to counter her. Bianca seems like a subservient doormat at first, but Shakespeare hints that (in her own way) she's just as rebellious as Katharina, unbeknownst to her clownish admirers and her worn-out dad.

"The Taming of the Shrew" seems like a pretty offensive piece until you see all the little barbs sticking out of the surface. Really uncomfortable, and truly brilliant.

As someone reading all of Shakespeare for the second time, I am always alble to learn something from the World's Classics introduction. They are scolarly and complete and the text always has footnotes on the same page. I have tried other editions but these are the best.
The Taming of the Shrew although it does contain episodes that are misogynistic to modern ears does portray a couple truly in love. As an early play Shakespeare is beginning to find his own voice.
