This volume offers students at an intermediate or advanced level a guide to more sophisticated French usage.

Unlike most thesauri, this one is organized thematically. Fifteen major categories such as Position, Movement, and Travel; The Natural Environment; and Emotions, Feelings, and Attitudes are further divided into 142 more precise subdivisions: Direction and Distance; Animals; Positive and Negative Feelings; etc. Each subcategory is numbered. The section Knowledge and Thought Processes serves as an example. It begins with a sidebar explaining the difference between the verbs savoir and connaitre, and a list of idioms using each one. This is followed by related expressions, explaining which are ironic, slang, or informal. The section is then divided into categories such as Ways of Knowing and Finding Out, Thinking, and Differentiating and Identifying, with several more specific topics listed under each. All words, phrases, and examples are translated. Information provided for each headword may include synonyms, idioms, quotations, glosses, grammatical information, "false friends," pitfalls for English speakers, and differences between American and British English. Sidebars and even the occasional illustration are used to further clarify meanings.

Specific information on commonly used slang and vulgarisms appears throughout the book. An explanation of the routine informal use of the verb emmerder and its components to indicate boredom, and variations of foutre and its less vulgar substitute ficher to indicate irritation will help users who wish to use colloquial French correctly. The section on communicating electronically contains important vocabulary relating to computers, fax machines, and telephones.

The book concludes with a section called Conversational Gambits which provides common expressions needed to introduce people, ask for things, conduct routine business, and write both personal and business letters. Great concept; flawed execution

A thesaurus for English-speaking learners of French, organizing words by subject rather than by alphabet, is a great idea.
This one is pretty good, but weak in several areas (see below). I don't know of anything better, but it's only really useful in conjunction with both a good bilingual dictionary -- I highly recommend the Collins-Robert -- and a French dictionary of synonyms -- I've found Henri Benac, Dictionnaire des Synonymes, helpful.
-- It's not at all clear how its French vocabulary is chosen. Common words like "collegue", "essuie-tout", and "pote" are missing, while uncommon words like "branchage", "velleitaire", and "buraliste" are included. Also, common usages of words, e.g. "(c'est) exact" to mean "just so" are missing.
-- There are occasional articles contrasting near-synonyms, but in a work like this, there should be many more. This is where Benac is very useful.
-- The indexes are incomplete. For instance, "towel" only shows up under "bath towel".
-- Although it tries to show both American and British usage, it is clearly British-based, and is often missing the American term, or gives an unidiomatic one.

The Essential French-as-a-Second Language Book

Most language-learning books are of those "Learn to Speak Linear-B Like a Native in 7 Days" type. Bad! Really bad! Only the First Ammendment allows them to exist.
Having already a good grip on Spanish and a better grip on Brazilian Portuguese, I decided to attempt the French language. After buying many books and finding most of them disappointing at best, this one is a real treasure.
This book is useful for students at all levels. Master the material in this book, and you will be speaking pretty good French. My tutor agrees. It is up-to-date and very well organized. At $..., it is a steal.
A classroom is a terrible place to learn any language. I know people with degrees in Spanish, French, and Portuguese who cannot hold a conversation in their second language. What went wrong?
Here's my advice, if you will indulge me. If you really want to get started French, get yourself
1) The Barron's series of cassettes/discs and listen to them over and over. Talk back to them.
2) A few pocket dictionaries, placed strategically around your environment so that you will find yourself leafing through them. Same with a few pocket grammars.
3) Get the Dilbert translations from www.amazon.fr.
They are great fun, use a lot of slang, and have plenty of informal usages that you hear every day. Tin-Tin is fun too. Don't waste your time on literature! As a beginner, you need to hear/read CONTEMPORARY DIALOGUE. Comics are great for that.
4) Tune in to Radio France International ( RFI )...
5) Get the Cambridge Fr-Eng Thesaurus and carry it everywhere you go.
6) Get a private tutor - for conversation. You need to speak the language in order to learn it, and your first simian grunts will be so grating that you will need to pay someone to listen to them and correct them. Not cheap, but cheaper than spending year after year getting nowhere in a classroom. Pity my tutor, but that's what she's paid for. We are making fast progress.
7) Worry about perfecting your grammar later. Speak, speak, speak. Learn to communicate before you learn to perfect your communication. Go for quantity, not quality, at first. Travel.
8) Buy a spare copy of the Cambridge French-English Thesaurus in case you lose the first.

IT WAS NOT AT ALL WHAT I EXPECTED FOR A REGULAR THESAURUS. THE FORMAT MAKES IT EASY TO FIND DIFFERENT THEMES AND SUBDIVISIONS. I WILL DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT TO MY FELLOW CONSTITUANTS TAKING FRENCH OR THOSE THAT KNOW THE LANGUAGE.

This broad grasp of the fundamentals lends insight and helps to develop the intuitive sense needed to isolate essential features of technological problems and design critical experiments. Some exposure to fluid mechanics, statistical mechanics, and electricity and magnetism is assumed, but each subject is reintroduced in a self-contained manner.

Great book: requires rewrite/revision; excellent for concept

Colloidal Dispersions is an excellent text, both for graduate students and for physicists/physical chemists foraying into the field of colloidal dispersions. The book starts by talking about particle hydrodynamics, then introduces Brownian motion and follows it up with description of different interaction forces experienced by colloidal particles. Thereafter, it discusses the thermodynamics of polymer in solution, how it affects the forces between the particles. In following chapters, it details the electrokinetic phenomena, and the physics of polymer mediated and charged mediated stabilization. The last few chapters return to dynamics again, with a chapter each devoted to sedimentation and rheology!

The book is beautifully written, and most of the material is useful as it is. Since this book was written in 1989, it requires a revision to bring it to the level of current understanding. The whole realm of nanoparticles is based on principles described here, as is the field of colloidal self-assembly. With a revision and few additions here and there, and maybe addition of some references to the work done between 1989-2005, the book can be made into workhouse of all colloidal scientists. I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in understanding the physical behavior of colloids. Coming with a background in Statistical Mechanics would be certainly helpful, and for people with training in Polymer Physics, the book can be understood by drawing analogies with the concepts used there. This is one of the best book in terms of the balance between the use of equations and words used to present physical picture and definitely one everyone in the field must read:) But as I said before, I will be greatly indebted to authors if they bring out a revised edition: I hope they do so soon!!

Good for Grad Students

This book, despite not being updated for about a decade, is still at the top of its class... This book should be on the desk of every scientist who is interested in interparticle forces. This book covers the theory and the development of colloid science from its early days to modern times. It is likely to be useful for theorists who will lean on the math and good references in the book and useful to experimentalists who seek to understand interparticle forces. Most experimentalists will probably also want to buy Jacob Israelachvili's book, which I haven't read much of, but I know Israelachvili is the man behind the surface forces apparatus (SFA), so many who seek to measure the interparticle forces described in WBR's book will want Jacob's book as well.
I am a graduate student at Princeton, home to the authors, and, not surprisingly, this book is a strong reflection of two courses in the chemical engineering department called Colloidal Dispersions I and II. I'm taking the series now, and, if you are in the class, you already know you need the book, and you shouldn't be reading this review.
I'd give the book 5 stars instead of 4, but I feel that it needs to be updated to reflect the increasing use of computer simulations (Note that I am biased, as a computer person) and new developments in colloid science. And lastly, though I feel the book is highly readable, the math is intense, and I suspect there are many scientists and engineers (myself included) who will have wished WBR had skipped fewer steps. Largely though, you can't blame the authors for that. The book would be a million pages long if they didn't skip steps. Try to use the extensive references to fill in the steps in the math if possible.
On a value basis, a 4 star book that costs only 2/3 what you usually pay means you are getting a steal here.

If you are intersted in colloidal forces this is a great text. it does not have a huge breadth of information but it does a very good job of covering what makes colloids stable. it covers DLVO theory solutions in several geometries, taking PB theory pretty much as far as it can go. Well, you can go further, but its pretty good.

You're going to have to argue anyway. . .

Any one of the essays in this book will benefit the student of economics. The point of Professor McCloskey's Program of Rhetoric is that *all* arguments are well, arguments. One hopes to be persuasive, or at least wonders what slaving over axiomatic proofs and penetrating dense economic prose is for if not to create a net gain in persuading one's peers eventually. McCloskey's argument thus (a persuasive one) is that a greater focus on persuasion itself will help the economist become more persuasive. Imagine that. Five stars, and more if you have them.

constructive and convincing on economics as a science

As an macro-economist interested in methodology of economics and the philosophy of science, i found McCloskey's book instructive and interesting. Especially the central role of language in science (as in all other human communication or, rather, persuasion), with clear links to American pragmatist philosophers like Rorty is convincingly put forward. The false and unhelpful dichotomy between 'objective facts' and 'subjective interpretation' gets a proper thrashing. I wish more economists and other social scientists would take note of this. Recommended for all economists with an interest in the foundations of their profession.

A condensed version of Westfall's 1981 biography of Newton, Never at Rest (priced at $100 and not reviewed), that nevertheless displays a high level of scholarship and detail. Westfall (History and Philosophy of Science/Indiana University) clearly has pored over the letters and papers that accumulated over Newton's 83-year lifetime (1642-1727), including the theological and alchemical writings as well as the all- important Opticks and Principia. There's a presumption that the reader appreciates the revolution in science wrought by Newton, and the fundamental philosophical disputes between him and his contemporaries: Newton raging against the Cartesians with all their hypothetical and vortex-ridden speculations in contrast to his own theory-grounded-in-experiment approach. But while one can acknowledge the genius that was Newton, not even Westfall--with his consummate understanding, fair-mindedness, and sympathy--can make the man lovable. There are of course, the circumstances of the scientist's life: His father died before he was born, and, when he was three, his mother remarried, leaving the boy to be raised by his maternal grandparents. Without undue emphasis on Freud, Westfall makes clear that such beginnings contributed to the loneliness and isolation, the neuroses, obsessions, and paranoia that characterized the life. The maligning of Robert Hooke, the undermining of the astronomer Flamsteed, and the vicious attack on Leibniz over priority in the invention of calculus add nothing to Newton's luster. Still, the scientist mellowed in the end. He presided over the Royal Society, gained income from his position at the Mint, was generous to his many relatives, and enjoyed the company of his remarkable niece in his house in London. On his deathbed, Newton refused the sacraments, confirming his lifelong anti-Trinitarianism (which could not otherwise be revealed in public). An altogether admirable job of scholarship, whose weightiness is balanced by the surfacing, from time to time, of Westfall's dry humor. The Greatest Genius - Isaac Newton

The preface to "The Life of Isaac Newton" starts with "Few men have lived for whom less need exist to justify a biography." To this I would like to add that few books have been written which need to be read more than the "Life of Isaac Newton" by Richard Westfall.
A thorough research of the life and work of one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived, if not the greatest, Westfall paints a vivid picture of the life of Newton from childhood to old age. He describes Newton as not only a scientific genius, but as the person who revolutionized science, and thus influenced the way of thinking, and indeed the way of modern life.
Newton, to be sure, was not an easy person to live with, nor was he a perfect human being. All this however pales in comparison to his superior intellect and deep understanding of nature. The book gives ample accounting of Newton's two great works "Opticks" and "Principia" and how these two have influenced the world he lived in, and the effects they left forever since.
This book is a necessary reading not only for those interested in science, but for all who want to have a glimpse into the way of life in the 16th and 17th centuries, and especially the way science and philosophy spread throughout the world.

a good introduction but not so good a history

Westfall's "Life of Isaac Newton" is everything the other reviewers say in regards to it being a good ABRIDGED biography of Newton. True, it is based in thorough scholarship and has served for the basis for many other Newton biographies to follow. But I would strongly caution any historian, whether by hobby or profession, to solely consult this book when referencing or discussing Newton. Westfall's abridged version lacks any mention of references (unless you count the very incomplete bibliographical essay at the end) in either footnotes, endnotes, or a comprehensive bibliography. In order to trace his references, one must consult his much more complete "Never at Rest", which is, altogether, a much more academic book. Don't get me wrong, "The Life of Isaac Newton" is easy to read and a good foundational text but should not serve as an authority on Newton, but rather a companion to a more authoritative text on Newton.

Aside from the historiographical issues in this book, if it is to serve as an introduction to early modern science, it might also help readers to know that they should read, at some point, some sort of text that deals with British history from the Sixteenth through Eighteenth centuries, as Wesfall provides no historical or political background in which to understand Newton. Based on my own reading of books to suit this purpose I would recommend Simon Schama's "History of Britain, vol. 2"; "Leviathan and the Air-pump" by Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer; "Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes, or "The Scientific Revolution" also by Steven Shapin (which would be less of a cultural or political history but a good introduction to the issues with history of science in the seventeenth century).

As an alternative to Westfall's abridged version, I would also suggest (though he is not an academic, he is a pretty well-regarded science journalist with a very readable style) James Gleick's "Isaac Newton" which is a little shorter and more in depth in some regards (and does completely cite references).

Insight into a Genius

The Life of Isaac Newton, by Richard Westfall, addresses the life and work of one of the greatest scientists of all time. Indeed, many consider Isaac Newton to be the greatest scientist of all time, because his work was the culmination of the Scientific Revolution. Westfall covers Newton's unhappy childhood, from which he escaped to Cambridge University where he emerged as a solitary, studious individual. Newton's genius found expression during the anni mirabilis, 1664-1666, when Cambridge was closed due to the plague. During these years, Newton explored a wide range of scientific issues, including mathematical physics, optics, mechanics, and celestial dynamics. He expanded upon Descartes' geometry, to develop the calculus. He conducted experiments with light, concluding that white light is made up of a series of colors. Newton also pursued studies of the movement of objects, following up on the work of Gallileo. Westfall covers Newton's lengthy career at Cambridge, where he devoted his life to his studies, avoiding most relationships and incurring animosity and resentment among many of his fellow scientists, including Robert Hooke. Newton's masterpiece was the Principia, in which he laid out his three laws of motion: inertia; acceleration; and action and reaction. Newton also presented the laws of universal gravitation. Westfall was compelled to write this biography - which is a shortened version of his larger, more technical study - to share the unfolding of the amazing genius who discovered so many of the laws underlying the physical world. This book is worth reading because it provides in an accessible form insights into the discoveries in the fields of mathematics and physics that ushered in the world of modern science.

Titian's "Venus of Urbino," thought by many to be the apotheosis of High Renaissance painting, is also a founding landmark of one of Western art's major topics: the female nude. Goffen (art history, Rutgers) has collected six scholarly essays by accomplished art historians that consider the Uffizi Gallery's famous work from numerous methodological points of view. Each writer addresses the painting's principal mystery: Does this eroticized, self-caressing nude actually represent Venus or is she just a 16th-century Venetian courtesan? The resulting package is a mixed bag that will no doubt at times strike many readers as pedantic and unnecessarily recondite. Written by theorists and intended for other cognoscenti and the inhabitants of their classrooms, this title should by virtue of its subject alone be purchased by larger academic libraries. Johnson (art, Univ. of Iowa) has written a far more complete, cohesive study of a single work, albeit one of much less consequence and appeal than Titian's masterpiece. In a direct and unpretentious style refreshingly free of academic cant, Johnson thoroughly delineates the literary and aesthetic antecedents of David's neoclassic depiction of two adolescent lovers' final parting?an image derived from latter-day refigurings of Homer's Odyssey. Her analysis of the painting's imagery will be accessible to a broad spectrum of readers, and her lucid explanation of its political and biographical contexts makes what at first glance seems a pale allegorical potboiler become instead a sensitive and meaningful work of art. Titian's greatest work?

Editor Rona Goffen has done a superb job anthologizing some of the most insightful scholarship surrounding one of the most impressive works of the Western cannon. Goffen (Rutgers), an expert on Titian's Venetian milieu, has carefully selected excerpts from some of the finest contemporary scholarship including such prominent names as T.J. Clark (Berkley), Carlo Ginzburg (UCLA) and David Rosand (Columbia). This collection of essays seeks to place the Venus in its social context by focusing on gender roles of sixteenth-century Venice. This discourse includes a broad discussion of the role of women in both marriage and as courtesan.
Ginzburg offers an insightful study of Titian's relationship to sixteenth-century sexual codes, focusing on his relationship to Ovid.

This book is absolutely wonderful! It is rare to find such an insightful anthology of critical that is also such an easy read. This book is a must read for anyone interested in Titian and the Venetian school. Its only draw back is that the essays are not reprinted in their entirety.

Aris Spanos is Wilson Schmidt Professor of Economics at Virginia Tech. He has also taught at Birkbeck College, London, the University of Cambridge, the University of California and the University of Cyprus. Professor Spanos is the author of Probability Theory and Statistical Inference (1999) and Statistical Foundations of Econometric Modeling (1986), both published by Cambridge University Press. Professor Spanos's research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Econometrics, Econometric Theory, Econometric Reviews, and Philosophy of Science. His research interests include the philosophy and methodology of statistical inference and modeling, foundational problems in statistics, statistical adequacy, misspecification testing and respecification, resampling and simulation techniques and modeling speculative prices.

the best foundation in stats imaginable

This book is absolutely remarkable.
It presents the material traditionally taught in the second-year statistics (but actually goes well beyond, e.g. stochastic processes) and will be of interest to all people interested to (re-)learn statistics well, either undergraduates, or advanced students of any level. Professors should also read it maybe use it in class. Students will thank them.
The author took more than 14 years to polish it, and I would bet that scholars of pedagogy will put this book as an example of the highest possible level of their discipline. I would also bet that this book will have a long and brilliant career in statistical education. On gets the feeling that the author gave the same care and energy to the elaboration of this book as people commonly give to research.
The author is also a man with a mission. In his preface, one can read with pleasure and disbelief a passionate attack on the dumbing-down of undergraduate education in Europe and America. Having taught undergrads in commerce with the "predigested pap" he is talking about, I can really relate to the frustration of the author. There is no dilution of material or dumbing down here: all the ugly details are given, which makes that book not only a pedagogical tool but also a great reference.
There is no book on the market that is so polished in both presentation and discussion, that exposes intermediate stats at such an intelligent, comprehensive level, and finally that uses the historical development to project such clarity on the actual state of the science. I would say the closest competitor to this book is the great volume "Intermediate Statistics" by Dale Poirier, which has more econometrics and which might be a bit more comprehensive on the bayesian side, but the main focus of this one is on UNDERSTANDING and SYNTHESIZING. By the way, the focus of this book is statistics, not econometrics, despite the fact that the author has written extensively in econometrics.
I wish I would be an undergrad again and re-learn statistics with this book. Nevertheless, readers of all levels will learn something from it.
Ah, and the price is right. Value for your money!

Spanos -- bigger, better

Like many, I used the 1986 big green Spanos book to learn econometrics. Simply put, this latest follows the course charted by the first book -- it first covers probability theory, and then uses this to motivate the modelling portion of the book. Unlike the 1986 book, which was terse in places, this monograph is much more comprehensive. It isn't so much that new subjects are covered (though some are), but the current treatment far surpasses the 1986 book. More graphs, to aid geometric intution, are included. More text discusses the implications of the mathematics. More useful, in short, for a graduate student trying to learn econometrics. The only book I think is in this class is DeGroot, and that book suffers from little attention paid to econometrics (though it does do the probability material quite well).
Highly, highly recommended. And one other bonus: Spanos discusses in the introduction why he refuses to water things down, and even has a quote from the mathemetician Binmore.

the book is great for anybody who wants to know the foundations of statistical and probability modelling. it covers all aspects of modelling like defining a statistical space, probability model, estimation, inference and its chapters on stochastic process were very informative. It was a great learning experience through this book. Basically it explains why we do it and how we do it
