The Public City: The Political Construction of Urban Life in San Francisco, 1850-1900, by Philip J. Ethington

This history of San Francisco from 1850 through 1900 identifies the active participation of citizens in communication, persuasion, and mobilization as the public city: the site of American political and social change. Challenging decades of scholarship that treats urban politics as the expression of social-group experience and power, the author develops the opposite thesis that social-group identities of race, class, ethnicity, and gender were politically constructed in the public sphere in the process of mobilization and journalistic discourse,

Review
"An impressive work based upon extensive research in qualitative and quantitative sources, the book successfully engages a variety of complex interpretative issues at a high level of sophistication. The author's forcefully presented arguments and his provocative conclusions will stimulate discussion and debate. The Public City is required reading for every historian interested in urban history, California history, and the history of American politics in the nineteenth century." Pacific Historical Review

"This ambitious work deserves close attention from urban historians, political historians, and political scientists....[T]he questions it asks, the wealth of information it presents on a crucial period for urban political development, and the ways in which it reframes the urban political contest opens the way for a renewed debate on urban politics that has been mired too long in bosses versus reformers and the social-group paradigm of political development. Ethington is to be congratulated for his achievements here." Maureen A. Flanagan, Michigan State University, on the Internet

"The book is well grounded in the sources, including election data, and it is especially suggestive in integrating developments in the realms of gender and news media into the overall analysis. The author writes clearly ... the book is an essential addition for all upper-division undergraduate and graduate collections in American, western, and urban history." D.F. Choice

"Practically every page presents some new insight or challenges some accepted interpretation....this is required reading for everyone interested in American politics in the latter half of the nineteenth century." Robert W. Cherny, American Historical Review

"Philip Ethington has given us an important and provocative study of the changing political culture of early San Francisco and, more generally, of nineteenth-century urban America....'The Public City' is a book that needs to be reckoned with. It makes an important argument for the primacy of political culture. It highlights the discursive role of institutions such as the press in linking and shaping state/civil society relations. It effortlessly blends qualitative and quantitative approaches. And it deepens our understanding of early San Francisco political history. These are no small achievements." Steven Erie, Nevada Historical Society Quarterly

"An impressive work based upon extensive research...the book successfully engages a variety of complex interprative issues at a high level of sophistication....his provocative conclusions will stimulate discussion and debate." William Issel, Pacific Historic Review

From the Back Cover
The history of San Francisco from 1850 through 1900 identifies the active participation of citizens in communication, persuasion, and mobilization as the "public city", the site of American political and social change. Nineteenth-century Americans relied on the Roman and Enlightenment models of the "public sphere" as a forum for debate and self-government. Drawing on speeches, pamphlets, newspapers, and census and electoral data, the book reinterprets the city's turbulent history. Challenging decades of scholarship that treats urban politics as the expression of social-group experience and power, the author develops the opposite thesis that social-group identities of race, class, ethnicity, and gender were politically constructed in the public sphere in the process of mobilization and journalistic discourse. New methods of political mobilization unleashed by the Civil War resulted in the death of republican liberalism and birth of pluralist liberalism, and in the transformation from a political conception of society to a social conception of politics in the years from 1850 to 1900.

Review
'[This book] is essential reading for anyone who is interested in the present state of economic theory and its likely future direction. Between them the papers cover almost all the areas of economic theory which were most active in the latter part of the 1980s (all of them still highly active today). All the papers are lucid and well presented ... and in some cases ... will remain for some time to come the best introduction to the subject for graduate students and other non-specialists.' Drugs and Rights (Cambridge Studies in Philosophy and Public Policy), by Douglas N. Husak

This timely and important book is the first serious work of philosophy to address the question: Do adults have a moral right to use drugs for recreational purposes? Many critics of the "war on drugs" denounce law enforcement as counterproductive and ineffective. Douglas Husak argues that the "war on drugs" violates the moral rights of adults who want to use drugs for pleasure, and that criminal laws against such use are incompatible with moral rights. This is not a polemical tract but a scrupulously argued work of philosophy that takes full account of all available data concerning drug use in the United States today. The author is careful to describe the properties a recreational drug would have to possess before the state would be justified in prohibiting it. Since criminal laws against the use of recreational drugs are justified neither by the harm users cause to themselves nor by the harm users cause to each other, Professor Husak concludes that such laws are, in almost all cases, unjustified. This book will be of particular interest to philosophers in applied ethics and philosophers of law, but it will prove provocative reading for anyone with a serious concern in the issue of drug use and drug control.

Review
"No one seriously interested in criminal justice in the United States can afford to ignore this book....Husak's book is certainly the best book by a philosopher on the right to drug use in recent years and will hopefully encourage philosophers and others to engage this issue with the kind of critical rigor it surely deserves." David A. J. Richards, Ethics

"Douglas Husak's Drugs and Rights is an extremely interesting and well written inquiry into whether adults have a moral right to the use of recreational drugs....While Husak primarily wants to make his case on moral grounds, this book also provides a useful overview of what we know about those who use drugs. The skillful blending of moral philosophy with empirical social science is certainly one of the strengths of this work....One can only hope that before we fight another losing battle in the drug war, Husak's analysis is given a wide reading." Donald W. Crowley, Legal Studies Forum

"[A] sensitive and reasoned contribution...to an area of debate far too often clouded by prejudice and collective hysteria." Will Self, Times Literary Supplement

Glad I read Drug and Rights
By Mr. Hillis
I used Husak's work to write a project for a logical reasoning undergrad class that claimed to prove deductively more than once over that Drugs should not be illegal in the U.S. The professor was pretty surprised it qualified as deductive.

There are some novel principles Husak employs unlike arguments I've read in other books. His logical tests of what a drug that deserved to be illegal would have to look like are important.

I was really pleased I decided to read this particular book on the subject, it was exactly what I was looking for as a critical thinker dubious of the War on Drugs and wondering whether or not the U.S. is totally off-base in its drug war.

The book is clear, fair, is not a manifesto by any means but a critical look at the arguments for and against laws-against-drugs by a legal, philosophical thinker and university professor.

This is the most important book ever written about the War on Drugs
By Genuine Alectryomancer
This book examines the issue of whether the War on Drugs is morally permissible, and concludes that it is not.

Many books written about the issue of whether the U.S. government should be waging war on drugs engage in an exercise of weighing the costs of the war on drugs against the benefits of the war on drugs. These usually involve either pointing out the unintended negative consequences of the war on drugs, or pointing out the ineffectiveness of the war on drugs, and/or the would-be costs of not having a war on drugs. While these issues are interesting, it is far more interesting to question whether the war on drugs is morally impermissible in the first place.

This book does just that, and it argues that laws against recreational drugs are incompatible with moral principles that nearly all reasonable people agree with. In other words, the book argues that a government exceeds the moral limits of its authority when it incarcerates its people for merely using recreational drugs.

In other words, let's say we were wondering what we thought about a total criminal prohibition of eating cheesecake. While we may well wonder whether a ban on cheesecake wouldn't be better for our collective health, and we might also wonder whether such a ban might actually prove impossible to enforce, or whether it might cause more problems than it solves, the primary issue is obviously whether a ban on cheesecake-eating is morally permissible in the first place. If it's morally wrong to incarcerate people for merely eating cheesecake, then the costs and benefits of laws against cheesecake hardly matter.

For some mysterious reason, most thinkers about the war on drugs either completely overlook the issue of the moral impermissibility of criminal prohibitions of recreational drugs or give the issue short shrift, and even those not guilty of either do not treat the issue with the kind of philosophical sophistication and clarity involved in this book.

This book addresses this primary issue of the moral permissibility of laws against recreational drugs, in a serious and sophisticated and clear manner, without pinning itself to any particular theory of government. This book is a serious work of philosophy, by a serious philosopher, that argues from moral principles and intuitions that most reasonable people share, but it is very accessible and clearly-written--no special training is required to understand the force of its arguments.

Douglas Husak is a professor of philosophy at Rutgers University (widely considered to have a top 5 or top 10 philosophy program) as well as a law professor.

This is the most important book about the war on drugs that has ever been written. If you are wondering about the issue of the war on drugs, this is definitely where to start. If you are opposed to the drug war, you may better be able to put your finger on exactly why you feel that way after you read this book. If you think you are in favor of the drug war, your confidence in your position will be seriously shaken, at the very least, if you give this book a fair chance.

Douglas Husak is also the author of LEGALIZE THIS! which is more recently published, shorter, and possibly even more accessible than this one. I would recommend starting with this one however, and then moving on to also read LEGALIZE THIS!

After you finish this, and LEGALIZE THIS!, only then should you bother reading any other book about the issue of the drug war. Either of these books will really open your eyes and clear your head.

Fantastic: a thorough analysis of Drugs and Rights
By Boris Yakubchik
Douglas Husak approaches the subject with an objective in-depth analysis of key points in the issue of drug decriminalization. He examines what drugs are and are not (for example how they are often impossible to categorize into 'recreational' vs 'medicinal') - he describes what sort of rights we have already and how drug prohibition is incompatible with those we already are granted by the legal system. Through empirical evidence, sound arguments, and hypothetical cases, Douglas Husak is very convincing in his conclusion that drug prohibition infringes on the moral rights; and law, needing a grounding in morality (as argued also in the book) is currently inconsistent and needs a change.

This book, though written over a decade ago is still current in its arguments: because of Husak's approach to the subject. For slightly different arguments (and a simpler and shorter and cheaper read) consider Douglas Husak's "Legalize This!: The Case for Decriminalizing Drugs".

A message as powerful today as when it was written
By Sam G
Hobhouse loses out on two fronts. To the academic political philosopher he is not to be taken seriously because 'Liberalism' is an insignificant book written for a mass audience. For others he was writing in a different age with different problems, so how can he be relevant. To deal firstly with the readibility of 'Liberalism', it is a distillation of his thoughts in an accessible format - GREAT! If you want more; read some more of his books, simple as that. This a wonderful book that gets under your skin planting ideas that itch away forever more. To style Hobhouse a father of modern liberalism is to diminish his worth and miss the point. Reading Hobhouse is not a second best to reading Rawls. He is more coherent, better argued, and simply smarter and more on the ball than all the so called liberals ever since (maybe that's a bit strong, but you see what I'm getting at). It's very simple really; what we want is maximum individual freedom, yet we all live in a society. The only way we can maximize our freedom as individuals is within that society, and in order for it to survive we must tolerate limits on those individual freedoms. Hmm; sounds a lot better the way he puts it! If you want your perceptions challenged, this is an excellent place to start.

Review
"The complexity, diversity, and internal contestations of Asian American literary studies are traced and enacted in An Interethnic Companion to Asian American Literature, edited by King-Kok Cheung. The six essays in its first half are organized according to ethnicity; the five in the second half are thematic and comparative. Bringing together established scholars and relative newcomers to the field, the volume provides an excellent historical and critical overview for nonspecialists as well as complex analyses, from a number of theoretical perspectives..." SIGNS

"...insightful....the collection makes a valuable contribution to those who are trained in the field, to scholars in American Studies, and to scholars of other literatures." Greta Ai-Yu Niu, Sweet Briar College

Defining the Common Good: Empire, Religion and Philosophy in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Ideas in Context), by Peter N. Miller

This book discusses the crisis of the early modern state in eighteenth-century Britain and sets it in its European context. The American Revolution and the simultaneous demand for wider religious toleration at home challenged the principles of sovereignty and obligation that underpinned arguments about the character of the state. At stake was a fundamental challenge to the way in which politics was described. The Americans and their British supporters argued that individuals, by voting and thinking freely, ought to determine the "common good." These influential ideas continue to resonate today in the principles of "one man, one vote" and "freedom of thought."

"...is both powerful and satisfying....a fine and stimulating book, written by someone who combines considerable learning with an acute historical imagination....it should become essential for all students of the period." Journal of Modern History

"...Miller triumphantly succeeds in a work of sustained sophistication and remarkably wide learning....Miller's is a powerful and original vision which demands attention." Times Literary Supplement

"This is an erudite and attractively expressed study in intellectual history. Part of a prestigious series, it comes with the imprimatur of influential Cambridge scholars who have done much to shape our understanding of how we should approach the political thought of the early-modern period." Albion

"A splendid contribution...Elaborate bibliography." R.H. Thompson, Choice

"Suffice it to say that Defining the Common Good not only introduces the reader to the complexities of eighteenth century British thought, but provides him with a wealth of both primary and secondary bibliographical sources. The book's principal value lies in the synopsis of views entertained by the eighteenth century British intelligensia. The players are numerous, disagreements between major figures abound, but there is an intelligibility to the discourse, provided in part by the common classical education of the participants who not only read the ancients but took each other seriously." Review of Metaphysics

"The essyas are scholarly and will be useful to historians of science as well as those interested in the interface between science and social values." J.C. Kricher, Choice

"Visions of Empire emerged out of a conference celebrating the acquisition of Joseph Bank's florilegium by the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library at UCLA. The miracle of the publication of botanical illustrtions from the copper plates so carefully and scientifically produced by the consortium around Banks was indeed worth celebrating." Greg Dening, American Anthropologist

The Sources of Social Power, Vol. 2: The Rise of Classes and Nation States, 1760-1914, by Michael Mann

This second volume of Michael Mann's analytical history of social power deals with power relations between the Industrial Revolution and the First World War, focusing on France, Great Britain, Hapsburg Austria, Prussia/Germany and the United States. Based on considerable empirical research it provides original theories of the rise of nations and nationalism, of class conflict, of the modern state and of modern militarism. While not afraid to generalize, it also stresses social and historical complexity. The author sees human society as "a patterned mess" and attempts to provide a sociological theory appropriate to this. This theory culminates in the final chapter, an original explanation of the causes of the First World War.

Review
"The ambition of the conception is, against all conventional expectations, matched by the clarity and grandeur of the execution." The Times Literary Supplement

"This is a book in the grand Weberian tradition. Mann's conceptual skills and historical grasp are virtuosic and the scope of his enterprise is truly impressive." Politics and Society

"...the detail and scale of the work ensure that readers will find it informative and useful....intriguing and educative." Chris Sparks, American Journal of Sociology

"Not the least of Mann's achievements is his ability to gather and analyze comparable statistical material for much of this period for all five states....The insights and observations produced by Mann's fecund mind as it ranges over a century-and-a-half for five major countries are legion....Mann packs so much historical and comparative synthesis into his book and is so widely knowledgeable about social and state development in Europe and America that no student of comparative or historical sociology or state building will want to ignore it." Sidney Tarrow, American Political Science Review

"This work offers a treasure trove of facts and interpretations that will be useful to readers in many disciplines...." Choice

"...a unique brand of historical sociology that is refreshingly iconoclastic, remarkably complex, and breathtakingly ambitious....a must-read for comparative and historical sociologists." Philip S. Gorski, Contemporary Sociology

An exceptional perspective for history
By Manar HAMMAD
Michael Mann's "Sources of Social Power" (vol. I & II) is one of the most genuinely interesting books I have read during the last ten or fifteen years. The author's culture and documentation are extremely wide, the time and space spans covered are astonishingly vast. This reading is recommended to all scholars interested in history, sociology and anthropology.

The description framework used to interpret history of civilisations is constructed upon the interaction of four social networks, namely ideological (or religious), military, productive and political sets of relations between people. While the author does not discuss these categories on the abstract level, their pragmatic use produces luminous interpretations of history. Moreover, the systematic use of the said categories renders possible the comparison of civilisations separated by large sections of space and/or time.

We would like to read (or write down some day) a semantic analysis of the system made of the mentioned four categories, together with a discussion comparing them to the "three functions" of indo-european mythology (religious, military, productive) detected by Georges Dumézil in the iron age myths elaborated in latin, sanskritic or avestic languages. This does not seem to be an objective for the author, more interested in the social re-interpretation of large parts of known history.

a worthy successor to Vol. 1
By Tom L. Forest
A philosopher of history as much as a historian and a sociologist, Michael Mann focuses here on early Modernity among the Occidental Great Powers -- France, Britain, Austria, Prussia/Germany, and the USA. While an inclusion of non-Occidental powers would be enlightening, there is sufficient material here to get an appreciation for the shift from agrarian to industrial bases for power. Mann also well elaborates the asymmetrical nature of power distribution and the variety of strategies used by those in power to maintain and build their power during this shift.
The intensive power of states increased dramatically, as did the larger aggregations and awarenessess within and between them: the nation-state was being born. Small level policies had unintended and often catastrophic effects at larger levels -- which is the kernal of Mann's anaysis of the causes of World War I. An upper-division college level book, perhaps a bit denser than it needs to be, still Vol. 2 is a most stimulating book. I look forward to Vol. 3.

Penetrating to the garden behind the jungle in Faulkner
By Bob R Bogle
I try to understand William Faulkner. I want to like reading him. I think I should appreciate him, but I find him very hard to take. To me reading Faulkner is like trying to suck molasses through a narrow paper straw. So I keep reading books and essays about Faulkner to try to discover there what I'm not finding for myself in his own hypnotizing words.

I just finished reading The Cambridge Companion to William Faulkner, and I found it to be replete with valuable insights, although a few of the essays tend to the more airy and ethereal kind, but that's what one should expect in such a compilation. Sometimes (often), in my opinion, or with respect to my own tastes and sensibilities, Faulkner's obsession with style interferes excessively with his storytelling, and by that I'm not at all restricting myself to consideration of plot. I simply can't penetrate through the syntactic jungle to locate the garden beneath. The authors of the essays in this volume are best when they can get to the heart of Faulkner and worst when they swoon over the jungle, mystifying the rhetoric, which is the least important part. I'm reminded of Hemingway on Faulkner: "He has the most talent of anybody and he just needs a sort of conscience that isn't there . . . he will write absolutely perfectly straight and then go on and on and not be able to end it. I wish the christ I owned him like you'd own a horse and train him like a horse and race him like a horse - only in writing. How beautifully he can write and as simple and as complicated as autumn or as spring."

Several very insightful essays are found in this volume, but easily the most important is Dr Cheryl Lester's "Racial Awareness and Arrested Development: The Sound and the Fury and the Great Migration (1915-1928)." I think anyone teaching Faulkner, even just a story or two in high school, would do well to begin with this essay as required reading. Its insights into The Sound and the Fury are trenchant, but of no less importance this essay firmly establishes Faulkner in his proper place and time in a way that no other source I've found has come close to doing, for it reveals a secret Southern history and early- to mid-20th Century (post-Reconstruction) ethos which still, all this time later, by and large remains invisible to the world outside the South, and remains subject to preponderate and enduring denial within the South.

Most of the deep history of America is the history of racism, and even now when we have come very far our currently unfolding history is very clearly continuing to spin out from our racist past; if you doubt that, simply reflect on how the South has never yet ceased to function as a predictable social, cultural and political bloc even while the talking points have been refined over the decades. I think it's not too difficult to argue that the history of the South has been a black history in which whites have intruded substantially.

When I was reading Dr Lester's essay it took me a little while to notice that she was using the word "racialism" instead of "racism." I had to look it up because I wasn't sure I knew what the word meant, or how she was using it. This reminded me of my ongoing concern with the superabundance of attitudes involving race in America, and how rich and changing those attitudes have always been, and how we have never created sufficient words to express that whole host of subtle meaning and distinction. I mean, the Inuit have how many words for "snow" again? Abraham Lincoln was more of a white supremacist than he was a racist, but to call Lincoln a white supremacist misses the mark by far, for example, but we lack words with better resolution to clearly express Lincoln's take on blacks in America. I think that's an astonishing truth to which we're blind. The word "racism" itself is made to carry the burden of almost all interracial conflict, mild to extreme, and so while being a red flag word it also in the end has very little reliable denotation. When, given our severely truncated vocabulary, we say something like "Racists judge people by the color of their skin," we are not only doing real violence to a much more complex psychological process underway, but we are also reinforcing oversimplified memes and raising levees against tidewaters of more powerful signification. There must be, I sometimes think, a psychological injunction embedded in the collective national psyche that inhibits creating an acceptable and functioning lexicon in order to actively block constructive discussion about matters of race.

When I looked up "racialism" at first I thought it referred to a pseudo-scientific accounting for racial differences used to justify racist attitudes, but it became clear enough rather quickly to me that this was partly, but not entirely, how Dr Lester was using the word. I came to understand, or at least to believe, that she was referring to a white Southern perception of blacks not in terms of skin color but as a kind of projected cultural Otherness: a cultural perception in which pigmentation need play no role whatsoever. Pigmentation then becomes a crutch, a phenotypic observation standing in for much deeper psychological belief structures. The word "racism" sweeps this critical distinction under the rug.

I was troubled by the word racialism, not by Dr Lester's use of it which was not only acceptable but in fact illuminating, but by the mere difficulty that we should require a word that ties back to such a despicable concept which its originators were incapable of perceiving to be notorious; that is, the defense of genetic markers to account for racial differences: facts of biometrics which are scientifically reproducible but psychologically and socially irrelevant and abhorrent. When I encounter such words they always leave me cold and feeling disturbed, for their use tends to empower their concealed original meanings. The best modern example I can give is that of "ethnic cleansing." Whenever I hear the term used in a news story I always cringe, because although it's being used to suggest an abhorrent action, and a certain variety of genocide, the very use of the term also seems to imply validation of the original concept. Now, I do not advocate discarding the term in an Orwellian sense, but I do think it's dangerous to use such terms or words too liberally and without regard to their history.

Like Faulkner, perhaps, I'm a bit stymied at how to end this review . . . I found this volume to be the most helpful so far in my own grappling with its literary subject. Dr Lester's essay is the most important, but certainly not the only important one here, and I'm happy to report that she's currently expanding the ideas she expresses here into a book-length work, which I very much look forward to reading one day.

Review
"Nice, crisp introduction to category theory, motivated by examples and use in computer science. Mathematical sophistication blends nicely with fundamental concepts and examples to make the connections (and usefulness) understandable to good undergraduates." The American Mathematical Monthly

"Within the setting of distributive categories, nicely explained here, one sees data structure abstractions done properly. The example of queues is the most compelling in that all of the structure of distributive categories is used....strongly recommend[ed]. David B. Benson, Computing Reviews

"...probably the clearest introduction to category theory written to date." The Bulletin of Mathematics Books

a recommendation of Category Theory texts for CS/IT
By Михал Орела
In September 1997 we needed a book on Category Theory for our first year undergraduate class in the B.A. (Mod) honors degree in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at the University of Dublin, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland. This book was at that time the only one that satisfied our requirements. Now we have chosen (Lawvere and Schanuel 1997) in addition. It is our opinion that one ought to start with the latter, a most excellent introduction of great profundity, and, for application to computing, use the Walters text. It is hard to beat this combination for a first year undergraduate course, as far as we know at this time (Sept.98)

A Very comprehensive textbook for beginners computer sci.
By A Customer
The Book begins with the plain definition of a category, as
does any other book. However, it points out a category as a
kind of (abstract) Data Type. Distributive Categories are
discussed as a milestone for developing the basic concepts
in computation, as those of imperative programs and Data Types.
The Book has a lot of examples (from computation) and the
author took care of drawning conclusions from them before
develop an abstract framework. The concepts of automata
and automata with inputs are shown (the later in a functorial
category). Grammars and Graphs are discussed as well.
The book has a very good introduction to the concept of
freeness and adjunctions. Its latest chapter treats the
computational category theory in the context of Knuth-Bendix
procedure. The exercises present in the book are great !!
They guide the student gradualy into deeper questions without
any frustation. There are very easy exercises which have
the only goal of finding out ones undersating of a new definition.
