'I recommend this provocative volume, in which I found much to think about, not least Sherratt's plea that archaeologists - not the media, tour managers or politicians - should be the ones who set the agenda.' Nick Saunders, New Scientist

Altruism and Aggression: Social and Biological Origins (Cambridge Studies in Social and Emotional Development)From Brand: Cambridge Univ

In this timely collection, biological and behavioral scientists address questions emerging from new research about the origins and interconnections of altruism and aggression within and across species. They explore the genetic underpinnings of affiliative and aggressive orientations as well as the biological correlates of these behaviors. They consider environmental variables--family patterns, childrearing practices--that influence prosocial and antisocial behaviors. And they examine internal processes such as empathy, socio-inferential abilities, and cognitive attributions, that regulate "kindness" and "selfishness." The first section focuses on biological, sociobiological, and ethological approaches. It explores the utility of animal models for understanding both human and infrahuman social behavior. The second section focuses on the development, socialization, and mediation of altruism and aggression in children. Several concerns underly both sections. These include the role of attachment processes, separation distress, reciprocal interchanges, and social play in determining the quantity and quality of aggressive and affiliative interactions; the function of emotions (e.g. empathy, guilt, and anger) as instigators of altruism and aggression; and the nature of sex differences. Several chapters present data on emotions that mediate altruism and aggression and also on patterns of association between prosocial and antisocial behaviors. The authors take an ethological perspective, placing special importance on the need to explore altruism and aggression in the real lives and natural habitats of humans and other animals.

Family Background Plays A Big Part in Both, so Beware.
By Betty Burks
Some people will pretend to altruism toward their human man, but always with the condition that their names are on the "gift." We have a few in this town who bequeath large money contributions only if they receive publicity and get their pictures in the local newspaper. One over-the-hill educator who thinks she is the only educated person in an apartment complex puts some of her "reference" (only in her opinion) books in the library with her name in large block letters. She has no humility or respect for the rights and opinions of others.

This book traces the interconnection of both within and across our species. Family are the biggest hindrance for certain people, like those highly sensitive. The brutes of society set out to hurt these special individuals with anger and guilt as their instigators. These aversive episodes are the opposite of kindness and empathy by others, and cognitive attributes suggest new paths for making sensitivity a blessing, and not a handicap. You learn about prosocial and antisocial behaviors such as selfishness ans separation distress among the young. Social play such as dreams have a part in overcoming other's aggression.

"I rose before dawn. The dream awakened me and I could not fall into sleep again. In the first passing freshness of the day, I scattered grain for the geese... The sun came up saffron, rose, and scarlet from the eastern hills, promising heat." The brighter side of human nature is Altruism and Empathy. There is a vast difference between aggressive and assertive actions to discipline confrontations. Many years ago, I sat in on a few sessions of a class on teaching Southern women to become aggressive by a Chicago male. When I wouldn't participate, he asked why. I told him I can be assertive when necessary, but never aggressive. Lately, I've changed my mind about that. Denying your emotions any longer will only delay the inevitable. After three years of being harassed and stalked by another being (not exactly human), I have decided it is time to take the aggressive, combative reaction. There is only so much a victim of such abuse can take. The function of emotions is to protect one's safety, physical and mental. Sometimes, it behooves the non-violent to take up for themselves when she has no one else to do it for her.

Aggression is not always bad. Sometimes it is needed for protection. It all depends on the individuals involved and the harshness and depth of a dangerous situation. I've been able to bluff my way out of a hostage situation which would have ended in death had I shown fear. But it left a scar, and now I warn the officials that a part of town is dangerous for bus riders and even ordinary women in particular. There is such a thing as taking this altruism thing a bit too far and endanger innocent people.

Structuring Politics: Historical Institutionalism in Comparative Analysis (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)From Brand: Cambrid

This volume brings together original essays by scholars working on a diverse range of empirical issues, but whose work is in each case informed by a "historical institutional" approach to the study of politics. By bringing these pieces together, the volume highlights the methodological and theoretical foundations of this approach and illustrates the general contributions it has made to comparative politics. The essays demonstrate the potential of the approach to illuminate a broad range of issues such as how and why institutions change, how political ideas are filtered through institutional structures in the formation of specific policies, and how institutional structure can have unintended effects on the shaping of policy. Through these richly detailed pieces, the reader is provided not only a thorough understanding of the method of analysis but also an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of the approach.

Review
"More than just a collection of essays, Structuring Politics is a showcase revealing how historically-grounded institutional analysis can push forward the frontiers of comparative politics. The authors use a diverse and rich subject matter to show, not simply that 'institutions matter,' but how they matter in shaping--and being shaped by--the political process over time." Hugh Heclo, George Mason University

"Structuring Politics achieves a rare degree of intellectual coherence in the diverse empirical material it covers. Its succinct statement, sophisticated refinement, and imaginative extension of the historical institutional perspective enriches greatly our understanding of the study of politics." Peter J. Katzenstein, Cornell University

"...a well-organized, consistently excellent set of research articles, all of which provide new insights and data." Thomas A. Koelble, Comparative Politics

Examining Historical Institutionalism
By Matthew P. Arsenault
Thelen, Longstreth, and Steinmo examine the new institutional paradigm, particularly historical institutionalism. In order to understand new institutionalism, it is necessary to examine its origin. The formal-legal model is the old institutionalism and concentrated on the formal "administrative, legal, and political structures." It was normative in style and offered little in the way of comparative analysis; they failed to look at intermediate level variables. The old institutionalism was replaced by the behavioralist paradigm. Behavioralists concentrated on "characteristics, attitudes, and behaviors of the individuals and groups themselves" to explain political outcomes. They sought broad explanatory theories, but failed to examine the institutional "playing field" on which the actors interact. From here, the new institutionalists "narrowed down" many of the broad theories posed by the behavioralists. They began to look at the intermediate institutions which define "constellations of incentives and constraints faced by political actors in different national contexts." The new institutionalism bridges the gap between the theories of formal-legalism (narrow) and behavioralism (broad).

Thelen, Longstreth, and Steinmo discuss both rational choice institutionalism (RCI) and historical institutionalism (HI), but find the historical model more helpful. Both rational choice and historical institutionalism argue that "institutions shape political strategies and influence political outcomes" but differ in many regards. Rational choice assumes actors' preferences are based on individual utility maximization. Institutions shape the strategies used for utility maximization.

The historical institutional model argues that choices are not always made based on utility maximization, but on satisficing; "most of us, most of the time, follow socially defined rules, even when doing so may not be directly in our self-interest." Historical institutionalism contends that historical policy or previous governmental decisions, and the institutional structures that emerge out of these decisions may determine the subsequent decisions made. The process is path dependent.

Additionally, there is a social or cultural element that shapes the goals and strategies of individuals. People often resort to traditional structures, even when doing so may not be in the best interest. As such, if we want to explain choices and strategies, we must look at the context within which these choices are made. The major difference between the RCI and the HI is that HI looks at both strategies AND goals.

Differences between RCI and HI include the inductive versus deductive methodology of the models. RCI deduces its hypotheses from a broad, global assumption and is developed prior to analysis, while HI looks at more specific cases and essentially traces institutional development backwards from the case.

The benefits of historical institutionalism include its ability to explain the "variation in political behavior and outcomes over time as well as across counties, and [serves] as a framework for understanding the sources and consequences of institutional change (p. 13).

Thelen, Longstreth, and Steinmo do admit that much of the current literature on institutions fails to examine institutional change and formation. Most studies simply look at cross-national "statics;" that is, policy outcomes based on the stable institutional configurations. Thelen and Steinmo organize their collected works around three main themes: (1) explaining political change while institutional arrangements are static; (2) how and when to institutions "become the object of change;" (3) how do ideas and ideology shape and constrain policy.

Thelen, Longstreth, and Steinmo offer four sources of institutional change: (1) "broad changes in the socioeconomic or political context can produce situations in which previously latent institutions suddenly become salient, with implications for political outcomes;" (2) "changes in the socioeconomic context or political balance of power can produce a situation in which old institutions are put in the service of different ends, as new actors come into play who pursue their (new) goals though existing institutions;" (3) "exogenous changes can produce a shift in the goals and strategies being pursued within existing institutions - that is, changes in outcomes as old actors adopt new goals within the old institutions;"(4) "political actors adjust their strategies to accommodate change in the institutional themselves. This can occur in moments of dramatic change (institutional breakdown or institutional formation of the sort that Krasner's model of punctuated equilibrium highlights), but it can also be the result of more piecemeal change resulting from specific political battles or ongoing strategic maneuvering within institutional constraints."

good overview of historical institutionalism, but misrepresents rational choice
By Arnold
I believe there is a role for historical institutionalism in political science. Qualitative analyses of historical processes can add to generalizable theory. That said, I think this book just widens the distance between rational choice and his historical institutionalism rather than bridge differences. First, the book makes a lot of errors and oversimplifications when describing rational choice. Rational choice scholars won't take it seriously. Second, the book defines historical institutionalism so broadly as to be useless. All scholars want to understand processes and consider institutions as both an independence and dependent variable, but the book doesn't set up a rigorous methodology. Overall, not a bad intro to historical institutionalism, as long as you skip anything the book says about rational choice.

Cambridge History of Eighteenth-Century Philosophy, by Knud Haakonssen

More than thirty eminent scholars from nine different countries have contributed to The Cambridge History of Eighteenth-Century Philosophy - the most comprehensive and up-to-date history of the subject available in English. For the eighteenth century the dominant concept in philosophy was human nature and so it is around this concept that the work is centered. This allows the contributors to offer both detailed explorations of the epistemological, metaphysical and ethical themes that continue to stand at the forefront of philosophy, and to voice a critical attitude to the historiography behind this emphasis in philosophical thought. At the same time there is due sensitivity to historical context with particular emphasis on the connections between philosophy, science, and theology. This judiciously balanced, systematic, and comprehensive account of the whole of Western philosophy in the period will be an invaluable resource for philosophers, intellectual historians, theologians, political theorists, historians of science and literary scholars.

Americans and their Forests: A Historical Geography (Studies in Environment and History), by Michael Williams

When Europeans first reached the land that would become the United States they were staggered by the breadth and density of the forest they found. The existence of that forest, and the effort either to use or subdue it, have been constant themes in American history, literature, economics, and geography up to the meaning of the forest in American history and culture, he describes and analyzes the clearing and use of the forest from pre-European times to the present, and he traces the subsequent regrowth of the forest since the middle of the twentieth century. Dr Williams begins by exploring the role of the forest in American culture: the symbols, themes, and concepts - for example, pioneer woodsman, lumberjack, wilderness - generated by contact with the vast land of trees. He considers the Indian use of the forest, describing the ways in which native tribes altered it, primarily through fire, to promote a subsistence economy. Early European settlers, he shows, extracted many products from the forest, and also began the extensive clearance of trees that would continue for almost three hundred years. Succeeding chapters, organized by topic and region, cover agricultural and industrial effects upon and uses of the forest. Dr Williams explores the rise (and often fall) of industries based upon forest products: naval stores, timber for building, charcoal and the iron industry, the railroads. Attention is devoted to the forests of the Middle West, the South, and the Pacific Northwest. By the late nineteenth century Americans began to realize that the forest was not boundless and moved to preserve those portions, still extensive, that remained. In the wake of the movement for preservation, Dr Williams describes how the forest began to regrow, especially after 1950, in areas where it had originally been vigorous and healthy, a development that continues today.

From Library Journal
Williams (history, Oxford) examines in this scholarly, well-written account the effects of settlement and industrial development on the Appalachian forest--a woodland which once spread almost without a break from the Atlantic seaboard to the Western plains. The process of deforestation was begun by the pioneers and continued by the ruthless logging operations of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; it was halted only by the forest conservation movement of the 1900s. Both a valuable resource and reference work in its field and a very readable overview of the American conservation movement. Highly recommended.

Review
'Rare indeed is the privilege of reviewing a book that is destined to become a classic, but Michael Williams's Americans and Their Forests gives me just such an opportunity. Williams has written the definitive historical geography of the importance of forests in the life, livelihood, and landscape of the United States and the way in which our thinking about and our use of our forests have changed through time in response to our changing needs and ideals.' John Fraser Hart, Forest and Conservation History

'This magisterial work, ten years in the making, addresses the question, what happened to the forest that once covered so much of the United States? ... Scholars, ranging from geographers to agricultural and literary historians, will applaud Williams's reach of analysis and attention to detail.' John R. Stilgoe, The Geographical Review

'While there are a number of solid studies that chronicle the significance of the forest in American history, this meticulously researched, elaborately documented, and carefully written volume provides the most detailed assessment of the evolving economic, political, and cultural relationship between Americans and their timber resources ... The comprehensive nature of this study will establish it as a base point for further examination of the role of the forest in the growth and development of the United States.' Phillip Drennon Thomas, Journal of American History

'Michael Williams's Americans and Their Forests is rich in insights. Much more than a historical geography, as proclaimed by its subtitle, it explores the role of forests in American history, economics, literature and culture.' Norman Myers, The Times Literary Supplement

A landmark text
By Liriodendron
This is one of the classics of American environmental history, sitting on the high shelf with Stilgoe's "Common Landscapes of America", Pyne's "Fire in America", Cronon's "Changes in the Land" and "Nature's Metropolis", and Reisner's "Cadillac Desert".

Williams does a masterful job of pulling together social and economic sources (including much primary material) to present a wholly original view of American history. For thousands of years people have shaped the forests of North America, and in subtle ways the forests have shaped us. However, forest history has long been hidden behind the curtain of political events that constitute the official record of "history", aided by the amazing shortness of human memory. Williams brings forest history (and environmental history in general) back into the light with a lucid account of forest history at the scale of the whole nation.

He dusts off long-forgotten sets of nineteenth and twentieth century statistics, and summarizes them in easily comprehended graphs and maps to make the point that the forest resource played an important role in population expansion across North America, in the evolution of our governmental structure, and in development of modern technologies. To the forest ecologist, he says 'Much of the forest you are looking at today is simply an artifact of human intervention in the past'.

Like all works which attempt to convey a long view of history, A&TF becomes a bit vague as it approaches modern day. The owls vs. jobs controversy of the Pacific Northwest is not mentioned, nor are the regrowth of eastern forests and exurban sprawl given the space they deserve. Nevertheless, the accounts of events in the 17th - mid-20th century are excellent, and highly relevant considering we are still dealing with their aftermath.

Soviet Workers and the Collapse of Perestroika is a comprehensive analysis of the role of labor policy in the development and ultimate collapse of Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Filtzer argues that initially perestroika was designed to modernize the Soviet economy while keeping the existing political and property relations of society intact, requiring a thorough restructuring of the labor process within Soviet industry. He contends that the collapse of the USSR has brought the solution to this problem no nearer, and that post-Soviet capitalism is rooted in corruption and speculation and cannot ensure long-term economic growth.

Review
"One may or may not share Filtzer's vision of a proletariat uniting society and forming collective bodies featuring worker self-management and political representation, but it is hard to see any other social force coming to the rescue. While the Marxist categories he employs have gone out of fashion among both Western and ex-Soviet social scientists, in his hands they retain a subtlety and depth that will be hard to match." Ideas and Forms of Tragedy from Aristotle to the Middle Ages (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature), by Henry Ansgar Kelly

'Tragedy' has been understood in a variety of conflicting ways over the centuries, and the term has been applied to a wide range of literary works. In this book, H. A. Kelly explores the various meanings given to tragedy, from Aristotle's most basic notion (any serious story, even with a happy ending), via Roman ideas and practices, to the middle ages, when Averroes considered tragedy to be the praise of virtue but Albert the Great thought of it as the recitation of the foul deeds of degenerate men. Professor Kelly demonstrates the importance of finding out what writers like Horace, Ovid, Dante and Chaucer meant by the term, and how they used it as a tool of interpretation and composition. Referring to a wealth of texts, he shows that many modern analyses of ancient and medieval concepts and works are oversimplified and often result in serious misinterpretations. The book ends with surveys of works designated as tragedies in England, France, Italy and Spain.

Child Language: Acquisition and Growth (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics), by Barbara C. Lust

Exploring language development from birth, this accessible textbook introduces the field of child language acquisition, establishing key theoretical debates. It considers what characteristics of the human mind make it possible to acquire language and to what extent acquisition is biologically programmed and influenced by our environment. It inquires as to what makes second language learning (in adulthood) different from first language acquisition; and whether the specific stages in language development are universal across languages. It will be a key text for courses in linguistics, developmental psychology and cognitive science.

Rather dry and boring. However
By Linguist2be
It's a hard book to read. Rather dry and boring. However, though it's not any fault of the book, we're having to read it for a 'second language acquisition' class, and I'm not sure why. How very young children learn their native language is not entirely the same process as how an older person learns a second language. So, to use this book in a class for teaching 2nd language acquisition is sort of silly.

Child Language: Acquisition and Growth
By Amazon Customer
The book is highly informative and breaks down the acquisition of language into really nice parts, such as: acquisition of phonology, acquisition of morphology, acquisition of syntax, and acquisition of semantics. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because it's a very slow and honestly boring read, the author also repeats themselves a lot and speaks in circles in the beginning chapters, to the point of being irritating.
So my suggestion is to read chapter one skip the next few chapters then focus on the really nicely organized acquisition chapters towards the middle and end.
Overall, it is an extremely helpful book when looking into how a child acquires their first language.

Prize Possession: The United States Government and the Panama Canal 1903-1979, by John Major

Prize Possession is a comprehensive history of U.S. policy toward the Panama Canal between 1903 and 1979, focusing on five key themes: the Canal's defense and its place in American strategy; the Zone's autocratic system of government; its strictly segregated labor force; its commercial development at the expense of Panama; and the equally controversial issue of U.S. intervention in Panamanian politics. The book is based for the most part on the hitherto largely untapped sources of U.S. government agencies, namely the State, War, and Navy Departments, and the Canal Zone administration, as well as on the papers of notable dramatis personae such as Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt and Philippe Bunau-Varilla.

From Publishers Weekly
In this well-researched, scholarly study, Major traces the roots of Washington's Panama Canal policy deep into the 19th century, with emphasis on the rivalry between the U.S. and Britain over the proposed isthmian waterway. The author, who teaches history at the University of Hull in England, describes how the U.S. gained treaty rights to build, maintain and fortify the canal and explains how the canal affected Panamanian politics and economics. Built between 1904 and 1914, the canal performed a dual role as a thoroughfare for maritime commerce and a conduit for seapower. Major argues that the canal more than justified itself in both categories throughout WW II but lost its strategic and economic importance in the postwar years. In a later section of the study he charts the U.S. government's decision to transfer canal authority to Panama via treaties signed in 1977 during the Carter administration. Those treaties stipulated that in 1979 the Canal Zone, created three quarters of a century earlier, would cease to exist.

From Library Journal
British scholar Major has examined a wealth of U.S. government documents bearing on American involvement in Panama and the Canal Zone, from Theodore Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter. Unlike such previous scholars as David McCullough, who have concentrated on how the United States acquired the rights in 1903 to build an isthmian canal, Major focuses on the subsequent history of the Canal Zone. His concern is how the United States administered the zone, governed its people, and intervened in Panamanian politics for more than seven decades. Despite its considerable achievement, Major's work will not supplant Walter LaFeber's The Panama Canal: The Crisis in Historical Perspective (1978; LJ 10/15/89. rev. ed.), which should also be consulted. Recommended for academic libraries.

Review
"John Major has produced a diplomatic historian's history of the United States' Panama Canal policy: meticulously sourced and laden with documentary evidence, this jewel will be the standard on the subject for years to come....Every possible document that is currently available has been used....[and] these many sources are woven into a narrative that is a pleasure to read." Margaret E. Scranton, International History Review

"In reviewing this work, one must begin by congratulating John Major and thanking him for his attention to detail and painstaking scholarship. He has labored hard and thoughtfully for his reader. The documentation is so complete and the discussion of issues so thorough that the work takes on the character of a reference book. It is the sort of book one keeps handy on the shelf. It is document-driven and demanding of the reader, but the rewards are high. One acquires a deep understanding of U.S. policy toward the Panama Canal, particularly as it affected the defense of the waterway, the governance of the Canal Zone, and relations with the Republic of Panama." Charles D. Ameringer, The Americas

"This work is a jewel of information." Gustave Anguizola, Journal of American History

"The study is both informative and substantive and as such deserves inclusion on any short list of works dealing with the United States and Panama." Canadian Jrnl of Latin American & Caribbean Studies

More Heat - Less light on an Old Story
By Gustavo A. Mellander, Ph.D., D.H.L.
This is a good albeit flawed study. It is well-researched but some will question its conclusions, the direct ones and the subtle ones. The footnotes are good and reflect careful research. The index is comprehensive and useful. Nonetheless, this book errs on being unduly critical of the U. S. role and administration. One is hard pressed to find a less imperialistic nation than the United States. Look at the French, Belgium, English, Japanese, etc. imperial examples.

Specifically the book covers the years from 1904, when Panama with help from the U. S. separated from Colombia in November 1903, to 1979. The book also includes some useful information dating back several hundred years. The author points out that many European countries wanted access to the Isthmus of Panana, only fifty miles wide in some sections, for trade and imperialistic reasons. England, France, Spain and other European countries wanted to build and control a canal to unite the two oceans. It took the boisterous Theodore Roosevelt to do it. His actions have been widely condemned or praised by countless historians.

It is well to remember that had TR not acted, and I am not an apologist for him, Panama would have remained a neglected province of Colombia. Remember as well that Panama, along with four other Latin American nations, joined Gran Colombia voluntarily in the 1820s. It was quickly ignored and scorned by Colombia for the next 80 years. To wit: there were over 80 up risings, attempts at achieveing independence, against Colombia during those years. They were not happy campers and yes, they were ignored by the government in Bogota. Cognizant of European ambitions on Panama, one far thinking senator suggested that Colombia move its capital to Panama City to guarantee its continued sovernity over the Isthmus. It never happened and the senator lost his seat.

In an attempt to keep Europe at bay, Colombia signed a series of understandings with the U.S. to guarantee their hegemony over Panama. The U. S. even intervened or threatened to do so several times when Panama tried to establish their independence from Colombia. The U.S. wasn't pure either, it wanted to eventually build a canal in the region. Plus the Monroe Doctrince was still in full force. Colombia's experience highlights the danger of seeking a powerful protector -- they may take you over.

The book has five major themes. "The canal's defense and its place in America's strategy, the Zone's regimental system of government, its strictly segregated labour force, its commercial development at the expense of Panama, and the equally controversial issue of U.S. government intervention in Panamanian Politics."

Clearly, the author has a very biased and erroneous point of view. Too bad for it weakens his book and negates all the serious research he did. He should have been more balanced.

Dr. Mellander earned a Ph. D. in Latin American History from the George Washington University. He specialized in U.S.- Panamanian relations and wrote three books and many articles on Panama.

Panama's Right to Self-Rule
By Panama 1821
During the US-Panama formation of bilateral foreign policy making, John Major researches a book that gives much attention to how the two nations came into co-existence and the great difficulties that followed. It was greatly unfortunate that "political semantics" took another form of how the US wish to maintain dominion over Panamanian politics. All political actors could not ignore the realities that at some point even political semantics and political theater runs its course. In particular and especially an event that changed the course of US-Panamanian politics. On January 9, 1964, flag riots in Panama made President Lyndon B. Johnson initiate and respond to taking political steps to how the future of US-Panama and US-Panama Canal would take shape. Panamanians were tired of Colombian exploitation for about 80 years (1821-1903) and even US domination from 1903-1999. It takes time for human beings to finally ask and raise the question, "Is this right and ethical, if not, why do we continue to do it?" It was time for Panama to have its own sovereignty without outside interference. Colombians can cry that Panama was a Colombian territory, which is a complete fabrication. Their interest were in the Panama Railroad and all the money Bogota would accumulate at the expense of all Panamanians. They took 90% of the money and left Panama with about 10%. They wanted the Panama Canal but when the French abandoned the project, they did nothing to complete it. All Panama wanted was to be free from Colombia, once and for all, permanently.
