This edition of Voltaire's political writings presents a broad selection of his most interesting and controversial texts, many of which have not previously been translated into English.
About the Author
Dr. Williams currently leads the Oral Microbiology Group based at the School of Dentistry, at Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK. Since Dr. Williams' first degree (Cardiff University), he has worked in the pharmaceutical industry, food microbiology and as an academic researcher. Having completed a PhD at the School of Dentistry in Cardiff on the immunopathogenesis of oral candidosis, Dr. Williams' research has continued within Cardiff University and primarily focuses within the field of Clinical Microbiology with an emphasis on studies involving microbial biofilms. Dr. Williams' research encompasses investigating biofilm susceptibility to antimicrobial agents, expression of virulence factors such as hydrolytic enzyme production, adhesion, and microbial modulation of innate immune responses. Of particular interest has been research into the development of biomaterials (e.g. silicone rubber, acrylic, titanium) to inhibit biofilm formation on medical devices. Dr. Williams is a previous recipient of the Senior Colgate Award (British Society for Oral and Dental Research) and the International Hatton Award (The International Association for Dental Research).
Raymond Geuss is Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge.
Quentin Skinner is Barber Beaumont Professor of the Humanities at Queen Mary, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academia Europaea, and a foreign member of many other learned societies. His scholarship, which is available in more than twenty languages, has won him numerous awards, including the Wolfson Prize for History in 1979 and a Balzan Prize in 2006. His books include The Foundations of Modern Political Thought (2 volumes, 1978), Reason and Rhetoric in the Philosophy of Hobbes (1996), Liberty Before Liberalism (1998), Hobbes and Republican Liberty (2008), Forensic Shakespeare (2014) and a three-volume collection of essays, Visions of Politics (2002).

Great reading!

I'm no scholar, but I like to read books by philosophers and historians. Voltaire has an engaging style that mixes satire, criticism, historical analysis and more. This book of Voltaire's political writings is surprisingly relevant today. The forward and translation by David Williams are also a pleasure. The translation has a colloquial, informal feel that feels just right for Voltaire's style. Voltaire's appeal to me is that he pulls no punches; he uses ridicule and contempt to dismiss the objects of his invective, which really shows the power of his written word. What makes it all work is that, in my view, Voltaire was right. He has insights into human nature and the human condition that leave organized religion and 90% of our political leaders looking like the shams that they are. While Voltaire seems to approve of the type of representative democracy that existed in England at the time, much of Voltaire's criticism could be directed at humans in general. Williams, in the forward, says that Voltaire seemed to favor an enlightened aristocracy to lead countries. After watching the US and the European democracies decay and drift toward irrelevance the last number of decades it would be reasonable to agree with him.
I particularly enjoyed the ABC section of the book (a considerable part of it) which consists of dialogues between three interlocutors. Supposedly one interlocutor (A) is English (B) possibly Voltaire himself and (C) a Dutchman. I can't think of anyone who possessed Voltaire's combination of creative imagination and powers of reason.
As a school teacher I can say that our teachers and students would be much better off if we read Voltaire in place of the much more popular Rousseau. Rousseau's ideas have ruined education!

In the nick of time

This was a gift and I haven't read it, however I never expected to get it in time for the occasion I was going to give it on. Yet, it arrived that morning, despite the Christmas holiday, just in time for me to wrap it and give to my nephew.
