Geography, Technology, and War: Studies in the Maritime History of the Mediterranean, 649-1571 (Past and Present Publications), by John H.

When maritime transport and communication depended on muscle and wind-power, the Mediterranean Sea functioned as a symbiotic force between the civilisations which surrounded it, at once the major dividing barrier and the major connecting element. In this study, the technological limitations of maritime traffic are considered in conjunction with the peculiar geographical conditions within which it operated, and which led to the establishment of major sea lanes on trunk routes along which traffic could move safely, efficiently, and economically. These trunk routes remained virtually unchanged from antiquity to the sixteenth century, and eventually constituted economic and strategic maritime frontiers between civilisations. At the same time, the technological limitations of the oared galley meant that coasts and islands along the trunk routes had also to be held, a necessity which favoured geographically the Christian West over the world of Byzantium and Islam.

Ground breaking
By JPS
By focusing on meteological and oceanographic conditions in the Mediterranean, this book from John Pryor, which was first published in 1988, shows and explains the limitations that sailing and oar ships faced for over a thousand years in the Mediterranean (from 649 AD, when the Byzantines lost the unchallenged mastery of the Mediterranean to the Muslims, up to the battle of Lepanto in 1571, when the Christican coalition defeated the Ottoman fleet). It also shows how these limitations impacted on naval warfare and piracy with the latter also influencing sea travel and trade.

The book, which is relatively small (200 pages of text), well written, and easy to read, is divided into seven chapters. These fall into two categories, as the author states himself in his introduction. The first category (the sea, the ships and navigation: the routes and their implications) sets the scene and presents the constraints and multiple limits that affecting seafearing in the Mediterranean. The second group of studies (the ninth and tenth centuries, the twelth and thirteenth centuries, maritime traffic: la guerre de couse, the Turks and the Barbary corsairs) provide, together, a chronological narrative which is informed by these constraints and limits, largely explaining why specific strategical or tactical decisions were taken.

As the author makes perfectly clear, this book is NOT a history of the Mediterranean and not even a history of naval warfare in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. What it did, however, is to show and emphasize the importance of logistical and technological limitations and open up a whole (and relatively new) field of research for historians and archeologists. What it does for us, mere readers, is to improve considerably out understand of the whole period of conflict between Muslims and Christians across the Mediterranean, in general, and of the ascendancy of the West during the period of the Crusades, in particular.

A very valuable and fascinating book to read

somewhat disappointing
By Ignacio Recalde Canals
I must say I expected a lot more from this book. Although there are some clear analysis, all what has some interest could have perfectly summarized in 50 pages. It gives the wrong idea that a limited technology imposed sea routes in the Mediterranean till the advent of "round ships" from the North. However, the same routes so brilliantly described in the book are used today by any of the thousands of yachts sailing the Mediterranean, both motor and sail. And it should not take so easily for granted that small galleys and galliots could not withstand bad weather in some way. There is room for further research there.

Very Good Overview
By Al
Dr. Pryor successfully synthesized 800 years of Mediterranean maritme history into around 200 pages. The central thesis of the book is that "in the Middle Ages the meteorological and oceanographic conditions of the Mediterranean had a profound influence on the course of human history because medieval maritime technology gave only very partial mastery of the elements." In fleshing out this thesis, Pryor comprehensively details weather and currents and their effect on square rigged and lateen rigged sailing ships and galleys. Pryor begins by describing the operational environment and proceeds through a logical progression, discussing naval architecture and navigation, and commercial shipping. In the last half of the book, Pryor discusses the naval and maritime relationships and distinctives of western Europe, the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic states and the Crusader states. This work is an admirable supplement to W.L. Rodgers' 1939 work on medieval naval warfare. Pryor does an outstanding job of moving the narrative along, yet including enough detail to support his thesis. His bibliography is excellent and shows his exhaustive research. This book provides an excellent introduction for anyone interested in how the powers in the Mediterranean basin used the sea as a commercial and military means of projection.
