A great review source for medieval political thought

The Cambridge History of Medieval Political Thought, c. 350-1450 was first published in 1988 as a hardback a issued as a paperback in 1991, a second edition was released in 1995 in boards and paper. It is part of a long-standing effort by Cambridge University Press to make the best scholarship in given fields and areas available both to the general public as well as students and scholars. This 'Cambridge History' volume is, unlike its well-known predecessors "Cambridge Ancient History" a one-volume stand-alone effort.
This volume contains approximately 20 chapters. The first three cover what the authors call foundations- the first chapter on Christian doctrine by Henry Chadwick (always a pleasure to read) and the following two on Greek and Roman political theory and Roman Law respectively. These are excellent introductions to the medieval developments in these fields. The following chapters trace the emergence of the Byzantine Empire (D.M. Nichol), the slow unraveling of the Western Roman Empire and the rise of the barbarian kingdoms (R.A. Markus & others) in France and Germany particularly.
Sections III and IV of the work cover the development of the rise of Church and Papacy in the West and its conflict with the various states that came into existence as the Carolingian empire came into existence. The cultural background of the political ideas behind a unified Church and empire is covered in two of these chapters, followed by an excellent chapter by Janet Nelson on kingship and empire. I.S. Robinson contributes a very brief chapter, 'Church and papacy'. For this period he has written a much larger and longer survey, (but fascinating) published separately as The Papacy, 1073-1198: Continuity and Innovation. (Cambridge:Cambridge University Press, 1990). This work is far superior to the chapter he contributes here- but then he was allowed more time and space. Such are the vagaries of contributing chapters to books.
The final sections of the work are taken up with the conciliar movement, the development of law, the organization of government, and how government impacted the individual. There is an extensive bibliography and a very useful biographical list of important individuals mentioned throughout the text. The bibliography should not be written off due to age- in history especially older articles are especially useful. Extensive lists of primary sources are listed also which will help the student.
The reader approaching this for the first time should be forewarned that the writers essentially take no prisoners. They assume extensive prior knowledge, and the writing quality can be mixed. Chadwick's chapter for instance, is a dream to read, and you are left feeling like you have been taught by a master, which in fact you have. Some of the other writers are a little less forgiving and assume the reader will fill in the blanks. So a purchaser of this volume, as indeed of any multi-authored volume has to bear these facts in mind. Anyone reading these chapters is well-advised to supplement it with further reading.
Having said that, overviews of periods as distinct as medieval political thought are hard to find- and this is an outstanding one. It needs a little updating, but not by much. All of the authors have published major works on medieval political theory or thought, and so can be followed up on. For an updating of the bibliographies, I would suggest the volumes of the New Cambridge Medieval History. Most of the authors in the key political development sections (Nelson and others) have also published in the New Cambridge Medieval History.
