This collection of essays issues from a 1986 Tulane University conference on the book's title. It offers an interdisciplinary approach to the subject by historians, political scientists, and economists. In sharp contrast to the confidence economists had in the 1960s that market economies could be fine tuned and their benefits spread to the general population, this work reflects the thinking of the 1980s, i.e., that while Karl Marx was wrong, and Adam Smith was right, even in booming market economies there will be losers because politicians and economists have a lot to learn yet before modern politics can begin to approach universal economic justice. The essays are very academic and turgid. Recommended only for academic libraries and public libraries with large collections in economics and political science.
